Competency 9 :
Relationship with the Community
“Helping others, encouraging others, are often acts of being kind that have more meaning that you may realize.”
— Catherine Pulsifer.
Relationship with the community:
The student teacher knows the diverse social contexts that condition teaching and school management and establishes relationships with colleagues, parents, families and other members and institutions of the community, to support the learning and well-being of all. their students.
During my teaching practice, I focused on strengthening the relationship with the school community, which included my colleagues, parents, administrative staff, and of course, the students. To achieve this, I made sure to actively engage in activities outside the classroom, such as the volleyball games in which my students participated, theater outings, and school drills. These experiences allowed me to interact more closely with students and their families, which helped strengthen my bond with the community.
In addition, my participation in the student assembly allowed me to make a direct impact on the students, offering support and showing my interest in their overall development. These activities not only enriched my experience but also helped the students feel supported both inside and outside the classroom.
Another fundamental aspect of my relationship with the school community was my interaction with other professionals and school staff. I established a good relationship with the librarian, the counselor, and the janitor, who were valuable resources for me during my practice. Collaborating with them allowed me to better understand the school environment and ensure that students had access to all the resources available for their learning and well-being.
My relationship with the other English teachers was also very positive. I worked collaboratively with them, sharing ideas and strategies that would benefit our students. This teamwork improved not only my practice but also the quality of the teaching the students received in English.
Additionally, I had the opportunity to closely collaborate with the science teacher and their practicum student, which allowed me to learn from their pedagogical approaches and also share experiences and strategies that could be useful in our respective classes. This collaboration was crucial for integrating different perspectives in the classroom, enriching the students’ learning experience.
My mentor teacher and the practicum coordinator identified this competency as one of my strengths. Both highlighted how my ability to establish effective relationships with my colleagues and other members of the school staff was key to the success of my teaching practice. This skill allowed me to better integrate available resources and support for students, which, in turn, contributed to a more enriching and collaborative learning environment.
My focus on building strong, positive relationships with the school community was an essential part of my practice. Not only did it allow me to learn and collaborate with my colleagues, but it also helped create a more inclusive and supportive environment for the students, fostering their well-being and learning.

I am sharing the invitation I created as an organizer for the Initiation of my Leadership groups in my role as a group facilitator, during September 2023.
With this evidence, I demonstrate my full command of various skills integral to this competence. This includes establishing relationships with our peers, parents, families, and other members of the community. For this activity, parents, staff, and community members were invited to attend the initiation of the leadership groups.
These groups consist of two cohorts of young people who work annually to train and develop a community project. This initiative serves to recognize their commitment and encourage them to undertake significant endeavors that will impact their community and contribute to personal growth and development. Providing a platform for recognition not only highlights their achievements but also offers me an opportunity to engage and connect with the parents of my students.
To illustrate how this evidence relates to competence, it's essential to highlight the significant learning gained from this experience. Teachers often play a pivotal role as the primary support system for students during significant moments. To ensure the success of such events, it's crucial to continue organizing activities that involve parents, enhancing their involvement and fostering a sense of community. This enables students to feel the presence and support of the significant individuals in their lives.
Our professional reflection of the mastery of professional competences was based on the group discussion of each of them, as set out on the academic competencies page. The competition text 9 Community Relationship was developed by future teachers: Kiarelis Sierra, Julian Deleon Miranda, Karla Ayala.
To master this competition we must know the various social contexts that condition school teaching and management. In addition, establish relationships with our colleagues, parents, families and other members and institutions of the community, to support the learning and well-being of all their students. Finally, we must be involved in the activities that take place in our schools.
It's having a good relationship with the community to improve student teaching. If you have a good relationship with the community and understand how it works, it will be easier to ask for help/assistance in educating students and having a good learning area for them. A good relationship fosters trust and strengthens classroom ties.
For this competition, it is the one that I consider having more control, since I was doing community work from my 14 years to the middle of my 18. There were experiences such as the creation of the newspaper La Voz de Llorens and the social awareness video 'We are Llorens' the most gratifying that I will always treasure. In addition to these, also after the passage of Hurricane María, together with my colleagues, I made a food distribution throughout the community. Have been these projects those that They have helped me to have a good relationship with my community and to be recognized in it.
The greatest legacy that I leave to my community is without a doubt that of La Voz de Llorens. This is something that I can see from now on since even though I am no longer part of the group, the new members have continued with it. Which is gratifying to me because it shows me that effort. That I did was not in vain and we managed to motivate the youngest. Also the video of We Are Llorens since it had a great impact, not only in the community, but also in others parts of the island.
What these experiences allowed me to know more thoroughly the conditions of other residents and know as interact with the different types of people that we could meet. So all these experiences help me when I go to another community either to work or to live, I have experience and a better idea about how to go about relating to people. So this competition I understand is the best and most comfortable that I can master.
