Types and Descriptions of Colonial Mentality Manifestations

There are two types of manifestations: the covert and overt manifestations.

COVERT MANIFESTATION

1. Internalized Inferiority

-Tendency to feel inferior about one's Filipino Ethnicity and culture.

2.Cultural Shame + Embarrassment

-Tendency to feel shame and embarrassment toward the Filipino culture.

OVERT MANIFESTATION

3.Physical Characteristics

-Tendency to perceive Filipino physical traits as inferior to white physical traits.

4.Within Group Discrimination

-Tendency to discriminate against less Americanized or less Westernized Filipino

5.Colonial Debt

-Tendency to feel fortunate for having been colonized and to feel indebted towards their past colonizers.

Only by being conscious of what it is and having the will to remove ourselves from attitudes and behaviors that conflict with our beliefs, we will be able to demolish this type of mentality.
