A. JOB SUMMARY
The OR nurse is responsible for providing quality and effective nursing care to all patients undergoing surgical procedure/ operations.
B. STATEMENT OF DUTIES
1. Patient Care
For Operating Room Nurse:
a. Welcomes surgical patients and gives immediate pre-operative care.
b. Provides and maintains safety and comfort measures.
c. Assists in any surgical procedure / operation.
d. Implements ICC standards.
e. Ensures that specimens are properly endorsed to the clerks/interns/residents.
f. Documents all relevant information pertinent to patient care.
For PACU Nurse:
a. Assesses the needs of patients based on regular monitoring of vital signs and
physical examination.
i. Establishes professional and therapeutic relationship with the patient and family.
ii. Obtains a nursing history and performs an initial physical examination.
iii. Correlates and utilizes normal and abnormal findings to determine plan of care.
b. Plans the nursing care appropriate for the patient.
c. Implements therapeutic plan of care.
i. Provides and maintains safety and comfort measures
ii. Carries out doctor’s orders
iii. Administers prescribed medications
iv. Monitors the response of patient to the prescribed medication, therapeutic
order and dietary regimen.
v. Facilitates referral of patient to other services diagnostic and laboratory exams, the soonest possible time.
vi. Ensures that all services are updated with the current health management of the patient.
vii. Facilitates laboratory and diagnostic tests for the patient.
viii. Follows-up the laboratory / diagnostic test results and inform the physician of pertinent findings.
ix. Attends to emergency resuscitative measures as needed.
x. Operates life-saving monitors and equipment.
xi. Assists in emergency/ invasive procedures.
xii. Provides relevant health teachings to patients and relatives.
xiii. Provides psychosocial, emotional and spiritual support respecting their cultural beliefs and values.
d. Evaluates the response and effectiveness of nursing care rendered.
e. Ensures implementation of ICC Standards.
f. Documents all relevant information pertinent to patient care.
g. Refers significant findings appropriately.
h. Collaborates with the other members of the health team.
i. Receives/ handovers patients accordingly.
j. Attends to code 77 calls.
2. Unit Management
a. Checks medical equipment, and e-cart stocks.
b. Practices safe and economical use of utilities/supplies/articles/equipment.
c. Records the disposition of dangerous drugs/narcotics.
d. Reports to the Nurse IV leaks and wastage in utilities.
3. Education and Training
a. Attends seminars and other training related activities.
b. Assists the head nurse in providing learning activities for new nurses, non-nursing personnel and students
c. The Nurse II acts as “buddy” / role model for new nurses.
4. Research
a. Participates in the hospital approved research studies.
5. Networking / Linkages
a. Establishes collaborative relationship with colleagues and other members
of the healthcare team.
6. Miscellaneous
a. Accepts assigned responsibilities as delegated by the Nurse IV or Nurse VI.
C. BASIC RELATIONSHIP
• Reports to the Nurse IV and Nurse VI of the unit.
D. QUALIFICATIONS
Nurse II:
• Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing
• Experience: One (1) year of relevant experience
• Training: Four (4) hours of relevant training
• Eligibility: R.A. 1080
Nurse I (contractual):
• Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing
• Experience: None required
• Training: None required
• Eligibility: R.A. 1080
