The first Percutaneous Pulmonary Thrombectomy at the University of the Philippines–Philippine General Hospital was successfully performed on July 24, 2024 under the leadership of Interventional Cardiology consultants Dr. Ariston A. Bautista II, Dr. Lauro L. Abrahan IV, and Dr. Eric Oliver D. Sison. The procedure was supported by fellows Dr. Paul Anthony Alad, Dr. Frederick Gavril Leyson, and Dr. Azel Paolo Bondoc, with nursing care provided by Ms. Elaine Jane Sagun and Mr. Rodrick Privado. Radiologic support was rendered by Mrs. Katrina Magdurulan.
The inauguration and blessing of the third room of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory—the Siemens Artis Icono—was held on December 9, 2024. The event was attended by Dr. Gerardo P. Legaspi, Director of the Philippine General Hospital; Dr. Eric D. Sison, Chief of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory; Dr. Felix Eduardo Punzalan, Chief of the Division of Medicine; and Mrs. Nerizza N. Enriquez, Chief Nurse of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, along with other consultants, staff, and heads of concerned departments.
On April 11, 2025, the annual Philippine Society of Cardiovascular Catheterization and Interventions (PSCCI) Live Cases were conducted at the UP–Philippine General Hospital, featuring two complicated percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures presented live via Zoom.
On June 30, 2025, the first Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Replacement (TPVR) performed in the Philippines on an adult patient was successfully carried out at the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory of the Philippine General Hospital. The procedure was led by Pediatric Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Jose Jonas Del Rosario, in collaboration with Adult Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Marc Denver Tiongson.
The first Training of Trainers (TOT) for Cath Lab nurses, spearheaded by Mr. Neil Roy B. Rosales, was conducted on July 7, 2025, at the Ramon F. Abaquez Room, Cardiovascular Section, UP–Philippine General Hospital. This initiative forms part of the unit’s commitment to standardizing the training and orientation of Cath Lab trainees.
On November 18, 2025, the Cath Lab staff conducted the lecture entitled “Innovations in Cardiovascular Care: Advancements in Drug-Eluting Stents and Balloons for Enhanced Patient Outcomes” as the unit’s nth installment of the Cath Lab Lecture Series. The activity was held at the ERC Room 218, UP–Philippine General Hospital, and was attended by various hospital personnel and staff. The program was initiated by Mrs. Nerizza Enriquez, with implementation led by Mrs. Ethel Rida Ayapana.
The first coronary intravascular lithotripsy was successfully performed at the Philippine General Hospital on December 5, 2025. The procedure was led by Interventional Cardiology Consultants Dr. Cecileen Anne Tuazon and Dr. Eric Oliver D. Sison, with assistance from Dr. JC Pilapil, Dr. Elray Inocian, and Dr. Rio Llanes. Nursing care was provided by Mr. Neil Roy B. Rosales and Ms. Elaine Jane Sagun, while radiologic support was rendered by Mr. Erwyn Bumatay.
The first uterine angioembolization following a cesarean section delivery and emergency bilateral cystoscopy was performed on October 6, 2025, at the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory of the Philippine General Hospital. This was a collaborative case between the Obstetrics and Gynecology and Interventional Radiology services. Performing uterine angioembolization immediately after the cesarean section and emergency bilateral cystoscopy significantly reduced the blood loss typically associated with the latter procedure.
