SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
SY 2018 - 2019
The purpose of this article is to inform you of the nature of the Young Innovators Program and the Photon
Team’s project entitled Photovoltaic Hemispherical Origami-based Tracker On Nano (PHOTON) as headed by
Modesto Remo.
A. YOUNG INNOVATORS PROGRAM (YIP for brevity)
The Young Innovators Program is headed by the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council
for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology (DOST-PCIEERD for brevity). The YIP aims to provide funding
to promising scientists and engineers and up-and-coming researchers with innovative research direction
leading to quality research paper, publication or product/invention. Its application is open to students from high school, college and graduate school across the Philippines.
The first batch of YIP has been officially sealed with the MOA signing last August 9, 2017 at the DOST
Compound - Taguig City. Out of 97 applicants across the country, only 7 qualified for the grant (including
Modesto Remo).
B. MODESTO REMO’S PROJECT AND THE CREATION OF OUR TEAM - PHOTONS 2D
Modesto’s project is called “Photovoltaic Hemispherical Origami-based Tracker On Nano (PHOTON)”. The
main goal of his research is to determine whether the efficiency of solar panels may be improved if there is an
application of a dual axis system and a folding mechanism. The team is working on a solar panel which, with
the application of sensors, can tilt in accordance to the source of sunlight and can fold under unfavorable
weather conditions which include strong wind pressure. Initially, Modesto was the only person working on this project. However, as the project went along, I, with the approval of Sir Neil, being the then school representative, and with the knowledge of DOST-PCIEERD, invited
5 more students of the same year level and strand with that of Modesto Remo to help him work on his
research.
The names and the specific aspect of research that these 5 students are working on are as follow:
A. Pio Bermejo: Design and Construction of the Project
B. Vincent Apin: Design and Construction of the Project
C. Vince Lina: Wiring and Electricity
D. Ana Batalla: Research and Communication
E. Kirby Cadag: Blueprinting of the Project
The name of this group is PHOTONS 2D. All of them are now Grade 12 students.

Project Oragon | Best CSR, AYIMUN For The World
“Project Oragon” (Philippines)
ORAGON is a Filipino Bicolano term for excellence in any undertaking. The word serves as the motivation of the group to transform youth to become a humane, dynamic and progressive individual thus making a better society.
John Paul Louie L. Abe had proven that UNC can make it in international competition. He brought UNC to #1 in the Philippines and in Asia with his "Project Oragon", a 3 – in – 1 community extension program that focuses on livelihood, literacy, and art for the students and the parents of San Francisco Elementary School in Tarosanan, Camaligan, Camarines Sur. More than 100 videos and document entries worldwide were reviewed by the executive screening committee of AYIMUN. Panel interview was conducted also wherein UNC ranked 3rd that made it qualify for the final round.
With his leadership, Project Oragon was awarded as Grand Winner and Best CSR, in the AYIMUN for the World - Corporate Social Responsibility Contest, held at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre, Putrajaya, Malaysia last August 27, 2019. Other winners in the final round are Water for Migamiya, 2nd, from Nigeria; Hope for Stunting, 3rd, from Indonesia; Children's Home Refurbishment, 4th, from Sri Lanka; and Literacy Opportunity, 5th, from Zamboanga, Philippines.
