Through this level of the Milestone Program, students engage in well-being events and programming, connect with peers over shared identities and interests, and reflect on their growth as students and human beings. After completing the one-year program, students earn a transcript notation that reads "Valued Contribution to Student Well-Being Program."
This level of participation is open to all law school students!
This level of the Milestone Program consists of three components that must be completed to earn the transcript notation.
All students participating in this level will complete a survey to identify the interests and identities most important to them. Using this, students will be paired with mentors and other participating students that share those interests and identities. The goal of these mentorship groups is to build relationships and community within the law school, and to support each other through the challenges of law school.
Mentorship groups will meet at least once a month, and typical group meetings will depend on the group members. That might mean a day hike at Minnehaha, or a discussion of a book you all chose together- it's all up to the group!
LLM students can fulfill this requirement through their participation in the JD/LLM Mentorship Program.
* Mentorship Program participation is a requirement for this notation. While mentorship groups have been formed for the fall, we may form additional groups in the spring based on interest. Feel free to email law-wellbeing@umn.edu if you'd like to receive updates on mentorship program openings.
Students participating in this level will 1) participate in five events or programs related to well-being each semester, or 2) join a planning team to organize these programs.
For students who want to participate in programming, qualifying events or programs can be hosted by WBI or other organizations, and can take any form. For example, one event may be attending a diverse judges panel, and another may be attending a community picnic in your neighborhood. Each week, a newsletter with opportunities for completing these events and programs will be sent to all Milestone Program participants.
Students interested in the planning side of things can instead join a WBI planning team to create events and programs. There are six planning teams, each relating to a key factor of well-being (authenticity, autonomy, community, joy, meaning, and vitality). Planning teams set their own schedule and work with a board member to create events, programs, or policy proposals related to their key factor of well-being.
Throughout the year, students participating in this level will reflect on their own well-being and growth. These reflections can take any form—a journal, a poem, a video—and can follow a suggested prompt or be completely creative.
In the fall, three reflections will be completed- one each in October, November, and December.
In the spring, the three reflections will be in February, March, and April. At the end of the year, students will also be asked to complete a brief feedback survey to help us improve the program for future years.
