Through this level of the Milestone Program, students not only engage with their own well-being, but serve as leaders and advocates for the well-being of their fellow students. After completing the one-year program, students earn a transcript notation which reads "Leadership and Advocacy in Student Well-Being."
This level of participation is open to all students who have completed at least one year of law school.
* While mentorship groups have been formed for the fall, second- and third-year students can still earn the transcript notation by joining a planning team and participating in events and programs. We may also form additional groups in the spring based on interest. Feel free to email law-wellbeing@umn.edu if you'd like to receive updates on mentorship program openings.
All students participating in this level will complete three short reflections on well-being each semester. In addition, students participating in this level will choose two other components from a list of three.
Throughout the year, students participating in this level will reflect on their own well-being and growth. These reflections can take any form—a journal, a poem, a video—and can follow a suggested prompt or be completely creative.
In the fall, three reflections will be completed—one each in October, November, and December.
In the spring, the three reflections will be in February, March, and April. At the end of the year, students will also be asked to complete a brief feedback survey to help us improve the program for future years.
All students participating in this component will complete a survey to identify the interests and identities most important to them. Using this, students will be paired with participating students that share those interests and identities. The goal of these mentorship groups is to build relationships and community within the law school, and to support each other through the challenges of law school.
All mentors will attend the law school's student leader training in late August, and a training on facilitation sometime in September. Multiple dates will be offered for the facilitation training.
Mentorship groups will meet at least once a month, and typical group meetings will depend on the group members. That might mean a day hike at Minnehaha, or a discussion of a book you all chose together—it's all up to the group!
Participation as a mentor in the JD/LLM Mentorship Program also fulfills this requirement.
All students participating in this component will participate in five events or programs related to well-being each semester. These events or programs can be hosted by WBI or other organizations, and can take any form. For example, one event may be attending a diverse judges panel, and another program may be submitting a picture of your dog to Pets of Mondale and then visiting the display in the subplaza. Each week, a newsletter with opportunities for completing these events and programs will be sent to all Milestone Program participants.
Students participating in this component will join a WBI planning team to create events, programs, and policies. There are six planning teams, each relating to a key factor of well-being (authenticity, autonomy, community, joy, meaning, and vitality). Planning teams set their own schedule and agenda and work with a board member to create events, programs, and policy proposals related to their key factor of well-being.
All members of planning teams will attend the law school's student leader training in late August, and attend three all-teams lunch meetings each semester.
