MIDB employees must request emergency services (Police, Fire, and EMS) by calling 9-1-1. As soon as possible after requesting emergency services, employees must notify and update the MIDB Front Desk at 612-626-6441. Follow unit policy for notifying your supervisor or manager.
CHECK If you witness or are made aware of a medical emergency stay calm. Check on the subject if the scene is safe. Try to determine the seriousness of the injury/illness
2.) CALL Get Help!
Call 9-1-1(life threatening) and/or 612-626-6441 (non-life threatening medical assistance)
Direct a nearby layperson to call 9-1-1 and/or 612-626-6441 (non-life threatening medical assistance)
Press the RED button on your Staff Safety Badge
Seek out Medical Assistance (only leave the ill person if there are no other options)

Keep the subject comfortable
Utilize an AED when someone is experiencing sudden cardiac arrest,
Signals of Cardiac Arrest:
The main symptom is loss of consciousness and unresponsiveness.
This medical emergency needs immediate CPR or use of a defibrillator.
Hospital care includes drugs, an implantable device, or other procedures
BRT Scenario: If the Behavior Response Team was called overhead after a duress-button activation and they discover that the emergency is a medical issue and not behavior, only they will quickly notify the Visitor desk to announce the Medical Emergency and cancel the BRT-only response.

The Medical Response Team will always include onsite Uniformed Security (available Monday-Friday 0600am to 630pm). All Medical Emergencies are announced throughout the facility on the overhead public address system. MIDB leverage clinic staff if available and medical response trained (available Monday-Friday 0830am-400pm).
Note: The M Health Clinic is not obligated to provide on call medical response through the lease agreement with the U of MN.
A person who, without compensation or the expectation of compensation, renders emergency care, advice, or assistance at the scene of an emergency or during transit to a location where professional medical care can be rendered, is not liable for any civil damages as a result of acts or omissions by that person in rendering the emergency care, advice, or assistance, unless the person acts in a willful and wanton or reckless manner in providing the care, advice, or assistance.
Basic Life Saver or Heartsaver certified employees capable of providing care should report to any overhead requests
Ensure the scene is safe,
Contact 9-1-1, request EMS and FIRE for assistance as needed,
Receive consent to provide care from the subject. Provide care within the scope of your certified training,
Utilize an AED when someone is experiencing sudden cardiac arrest
Stay with the subject until a responder with higher training arrives,
Assist emergency responders, if requested.
Update the MIDB Front Desk at 612-626-6441 or with handheld radios
Do not leave until “all clear” is announced.
After the ‘All-clear” Announcement responders can return to their normal activities
Make the scene safe to resume normal business, pick up refuse, disinfect surfaces if necessary (contact FM Custodial through RFSS)
Staff who responded to the event should meet to debrief immediately following the “all-clear” announcement,
Walk through the event orally.
Discuss any immediate action items (injuries, custodial needs, briefing of leadership, documentation assignments, urgency to call a meeting of SIAC)
Add any additional “lessons learned” to individual reports
Send reports to direct supervisor, the Workplace Safety Manager (jalf@umn.edu), and midb@umn.edu
Communicate equipment and material re-stocking needs to the Visitor Experience Coordinator at midb@umn.edu or 651-626-6441 before returning to regular duties or designating a responsible party.
Supervisors and employees should follow all workplace injury protocols for their organization, including but not limited to U of MN, Fairview, and/or University of Minnesota Physicians. Link to U of MN First Report of Injury
Security Officers should gather witness statements if necessary.
Brief organizational leadership as appropriate
Return to pre-event activities and resume normal business.
