Navigating the Peer Review Process

BIOSKETCH

Shona Whyte received her BSc (Zoology) from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland and a PhD from Aberdeen University studying the infection dynamics of the eyefluke in rainbow trout and the host immune response. She received a post-doctoral fellowship from the Institute of Aquaculture, Stirling University, Scotland to investigate the efficacy of novel, chemotherapeutic and prophylactic treatments for sea-lice infestations in cultured Atlantic salmon. Currently, she is the senior scientist and adjunct professor and graduate programme faculty in the Department of Pathology & Microbiology, Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island, Canada. Dr. Whyte received her Master of Business Administration in 2012 from the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI).

 

Since obtaining her PhD, Dr. Whyte has been employed by both academic institutions and private industry. She has significant professional experience in contract research for the

pharmaceutical and aquaculture support industries in Canada and internationally. She has considerable experience in the development of disease models of finfish including validation of preliminary and confirmatory laboratory studies for the pharmaceutical and bioactives industry at a level which is acceptable for regulatory compliance with US FDA and OECD Good Laboratory Practice standards. Her interest is in fish-pathogen interactions and the development of best practices and tools to better understand and mitigate disease to specifically improve the welfare and immune health of salmon. Dr. Whyte has served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Aquatic Animal Health, as an Associate Editor from 2014-2019 and Editor from January 2020 to present. She has also served as Chair of Scientific Merit Committee at UPEI from 2011 to 2015 and Chair of the Animal Care Committee at UPEI from 2015 to present. She is currently a member of the Canadian Council of Animal Care committee on the expert review of the guidelines on the care and use of fish in research, teaching, and testing.
