Dr. Al Camus is a veterinary anatomic pathologist and AFS-FHS certified fish pathologist with over 30 years of experience in fish and aquatic animal health. Dr. Camus received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Louisiana State University in 1984 and later completed an anatomic pathology residency and doctoral degree, also at LSU, during which time he trained under Dr. John Hawke and Dr. Ron Thune while working as a diagnostician in the Louisiana Aquatic Diagnostic Laboratory and conducting doctoral studies on the pathobiology of Streptococcus iniae infections in cultured tilapia. After receiving his PhD, Dr. Camus worked with the Mississippi catfish industry for 5 years while serving as Director of the Aquatic Research and Diagnostic Laboratory operated through Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine at the National Warmwater Aquaculture Center in Stoneville, Mississippi. Dr. Camus is currently a Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Since 2016, he has directed a combined aquatic pathology residency/PhD program at UGA in partnership with the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. Dr. Camus has worked with disease issues in hundreds of fish species and has over 150 peer-reviewed papers in print or review. The aquatic pathology program at UGA has graduated six students who now work in various aspects of fish health and disease diagnostics.
