Psych Foundations Travel Funding

The psychological foundations of education program offers additional funding above and beyond the department award amounts. Eligible graduate students receive funding for student travel, in addition to department level funding, during the academic year. 

Awards Amounts

Up to $500 of travel funds each academic year, defined as the period September 1 to August 31. 

Conditions

• Psychological foundations of education graduate students can request up to $500 of travel funds each academic year, defined as the period September 1 to August 31.

• Travel funds can be requested for airfare, registration, ground transportation, and hotel. Receipts cannot be submitted for meals or other expenses.

• A student can make up to two requests per academic year. For example, a student might request $200 for their hotel for conference 1 and $300 for their aifare and registration for conference 2.

• Funds can only be requested for academic year in which they are incurred.

• The purpose of the psychological foundations of education travel funding is to support students as researchers and members of their professional community. Therefore, students must be named an author on a presentation, poster, roundtable, or other session format. However, we make exceptions, in two circumstances. The first exception is for first-year students, for obvious reasons. The second exception is for senior students (e.g., ABD) who submitted a proposal to a primary conference in their field that was rejected. Because they are close to graduating and entering the job market, attending conferences in their field is important, and they are, therefore, eligible for travel funding once

• The expectation is that the conference experience will inform the student's research and/or further their professional development, and will be reflected in their U of M activities. For example, it might lead to a presentation or poster at the department's Graduate Student Research Day or college's Research Day, upon returning.

To utilize these funds, email these items to edpsych-purchasing@umn.edu for review and guidance on registering:

• A psychological foundations of education travel request form must be filled out with advisor's signature (email indicating approval accepted in lieu of signature)

• Conference registration details

Out of pocket expenses are not guaranteed reimbursable if proper approvals are not secured prior to the purchase.
