Working while being a student is a great opportunity to earn money, make friends, and form lasting relationships with supervisors that could lead to future career opportunities. There are plenty of jobs available for both work-study students and non-work study students at Michigan, as well as on-campus and off-campus positions.
Being employed through the University has many benefits associated with it. The first is that your co-workers are often fellow students, allowing you an extra opportunity to meet people outside of the classroom. In addition, University sponsored jobs understand that you are a student first, and are very good at being flexible around students’ hectic schedules.
The University also offers a handful of jobs at various off campus locations that are run through the University’s Student Employment Office, but allow students a unique experience working at local businesses and non-profit agencies. If you are interested in these opportunities, just be sure to factor in any extra transportation time and/or costs associated with working off-campus.
Being a large research institution, University of Michigan faculty and staff will often hire students to help them conduct cutting edge research in their perspective fields. For Community College transfer students, the Changing Gears program can help you get connected to a research opportunity.
In order to find off-campus jobs, work-study jobs, research assistant positions, and more, head to studentemployment.umich.edu and check out the student job board. It includes a categorized list of all the open positions and instructions on how to go about applying for them.
Finally, U-M’s Work/Life Resource Center coordinates a “Family Helper” service for students looking for work in child care, tutoring, pet sitting, housekeeping, or other family services.
For most Ann Arbor area jobs, make sure to start your search as soon as possible, as many employers start hiring in August for the fall term. Happy job hunting!
