We performed 3 tests to validate Mane Magic. The first test was a scalp access test for which we used wigs of different hair types to analyse if our device could access the scalp for users with different hair thickness and lengths. The next test was a usability test where on-scalp feel of the roller ball was tested on an actual human. The third test was regarding handle ergonomics and how the handle fit different hand sizes.
Goal: Inspect how effectively Mane Magic can access the scalp by using foam heads with wigs of different hair types and lengths.
Procedure:
Cover foam head with wrapping to protect it
Dye hair oil with food coloring so that it’s visible
Place wig on head
Fill reservoir with hair oil. Measure out amount with syringe and record how much was inputted.
Close device
Use device to cover scalp with oil
Check in increments of 1min to assess coverage
Add oil to reservoir as needed but record each additional amount
Record final amount of time taken to cover scalp
If scalp is not fully covered after 6min take note.
Record final amount of scalp coverage after 10min (maximum time)
Repeat steps 3-10 for each wig
Set up of male and female foam heads, 3 wigs, dye, syringe, and hair oil
3 different wigs tested
Cover foam head
2. Add paper towel
3. Put wig on foam head
4. Take prototype reservoir
4. Attach roller balls
5. Take hair oil
6. Take 20 ml oil
7. Fill reservoir
8. Oil in reservoir
9. Maneuver device
Procedure: Use the device on an actual human to assess the on-scalp feel of the product.
Result: On-scalp feel is good. User feels comfortable using the device.
Procedure:
Measure length of each participants palm.
Ask participant to manuever device across their head for approximately 1minute.
Participant then rated their experience on a scale of 1-5:
1- Not Messy
2- Messy Fingertips
3- Messy Fingers
4- Messy Palms
5- Unuseable
Repeat for 10 participants.

Using on scalp
Result: One participant felt that the device fit perfectly. Two found it a little small for their palm and fingers. One found it comfortable to insert 3 fingers instead of 4. The device is being modified to accommodate a larger group of people. The divets in the top face of the handle have been removed so the surface is now smooth. The diameter of the device has also been increased to accommodate a larger range of hand sizes.
