When creating the concept tree our team considered the different mechanisms we would use to disperse the hair oil/serum from our device. The tip shape and material would be determined based on the mechanism we chose as we felt it was important to display all potential mechanisms. While this could have been done for the form of the object, we decided early on that the user would be gripping the device with their hand or palm and therefore any form or grip would be amenable to the mechanism we decided upon.
The types of mechanisms fall into 3 categories:
Roller
Seeping through the material
Force.
The roller category has one main mechanism which is the roller ball. The roller ball mechanism is the same mechanism that ball point pens use to dispense the ink. Seeping through the material is how we labeled mechanisms that involved brushes or felt tips where the oil/serum would essentially "leak" through the tip in order to get access to the scalp. The final category, force, is what we used to differentiate any sort of external pressure or internal vibration that would cause the oil/serum to be released from the device onto the scalp. We used the mechanisms that we ideated in this concept tree to help inform our down selection as well as ideate how we could best combine our form and mechanisms to develop the best design.
