Mane Magic has 17 roller balls that fit into their casings. The roller-ball-casing pieces fit into the protrusions on the flexible reservoir. A flat top is snapped into the flexible reservoir. The hole on the flat top is what oil is poured through. The flat top twist-off cap is then secures on the flat top. The flexible reservoir is snapped into the hollow stabilizing ring. The hollow stabilizing ring can be fit into the top casing. The device can be set on the storage plate when not in use. To refill, only the top casing and the flat top twist-off cap need to be removed.
To operate the device, the user remove the top casing by holding the handle with their fingers.
They then remove the flat top twist-off cap, which has a cross extrusion for the user to twist it off.
Through the hole on the flat top, the user fill the device with hair oil. The users then secures the flat top twist-off cap and the top casing.
To use the device, the user slides their fingers into the gap on the top casing and grip the device.
They then maneuver the device on their scalp. The roller balls rotate and dispense oil.
Once, the reservoir is empty, the user can refill the device again.
To validate our product, we conducted multiple tests. We conducted a scalp access test with wigs of different hair type, thickness and length on foam heads. We maneuvered the device on the wigs and inspected the foam heads for oil. We conducted usability tests to understand user comfort while using the device. We observed the on-scalp feel of the roller balls and also tested the handle with multiple people with different hand sizes.
We also conducted tests to analyse failure modes. We did a drop test to test stability and a leakage test to determine leakage during storage.
To analyse parameters, we tested different roller-ball diameters on users to identify the correct roller ball size that would have good scalp access and feel good on the scalp. To determine the scalp area that would be covered with a certain amount of oil, we measured the area of oil on a paper towel for a given volume of oil, by rolling the roller balls on the paper towel.
