Design Drivers:
The main design drivers of Mane Magic are elaborated below:
Ergonomic Handle and Casing -
The handle of the oil dispensing product must be comfortable to hold and maneuver across the scalp for enhanced usability.
Initial development involved finding the largest hand circumference for sizing the grip while divots were added to provide a better, glove-like fit. While the overall grip size was adequate, the divots proved to be slightly smaller than required and will be replaced with a gel/memory foam pad that conforms to the shape of the hands while providing a softer touch in the mass-production prototype.
Reservoir Volume -
The product reservoir must be large enough to hold multiple uses of the oil/serum being used for the refill frequency to be reasonably low.
Initial development involved using numbers to get an estimate of the number of effective applications per refill and resizing the reservoir to fit in an adequate number of applications
Stability & Failure prevention -
The product must be sturdy enough to not break and/or fail on falling from the user’s hands during operation.
Testing and development involved drop-testing the product from a max height of 5 feet and assessing damage/failure for the product
Ease of cleaning -
To enhance ease of use, the product needs to be very easy to clean from dried/coagulated hair product with easily removable parts
Technical development for this involved tweaking the design to make the roller ball modules easy to remove for easier cleaning and having a larger, removable lid to facilitate cleaning the nooks and crannies of the oil/serum reservoir
Biocompatibility -
To prevent untoward reactions from materials due to incompatibility with humans, the materials selected must be biocompatible. For this, the team selected materials such as stainless steel, TPU, and polypropylene which are also widely used in the biomedical industry and have proven biocompatibility characteristics
Eco Audit -
In the development of Mane Magic, we have been mindful of the environmental implications of our material choices. Recognizing the significance of sustainability in product design, we have taken a conscientious approach to select materials that prioritize both functionality and environmental responsibility.
Our primary materials, PA6/66 copolymer, and silicone, were chosen after an evaluation of their environmental impact. PA6/66 copolymer offers durability, strength, and chemical resistance necessary for the performance of our device, while silicone provides flexibility and a safe application for hair oils. These materials were selected due to their recyclability, allowing for the possibility of reprocessing and reducing the overall environmental footprint of our product.
Additionally, the roller balls used are made of stainless steel, which is a highly recyclable material with a long lifespan, ensuring the durability and reusability of the components in our hair oil applicator.
