Level 0-2 consumer vehicles are currently widely available to the public. Level 3 vehicles have recently become available on a very limited basis, with most auto manufacturers aiming to launch Level 3 vehicles in the near future (1-2 years). There are vehicles present in some localities and on a very limited basis that would fall somewhere between Level 3-4. In contained warehouse settings, Level 4 autonomy is in place.
No one is entirely sure when Level 5 autonomous vehicles will become integrated into our cities and infrastructure. Some companies are predicting availability as early as 2025, but more consensus predictions fall somewhere around 2030. Research and testing still have a long way to go and the appropriate policy would need to be moved through government to make the vehicles a reality. A more agreed upon effect of autonomous vehicles and ride sharing platforms such as Uber and Lyft though, is the decrease in personal vehicle ownership. With the introduction of fully autonomous vehicles, this will be even more apparent. The following forecast from Deloitte illustrates how personal vehicle ownership may change in the coming years.
