Semret Hailie

for Senator

What relevant experience would you bring to the position you are seeking?

The senatorial position requires a level headed candidate that can be a great leader and communicator, luckily I check off those boxes. As a STRiVE participant I was able to expand on these skills and begin examining areas of UMBC that would benefit from change based on student needs. My work and affiliation with several UMBC organizations means I have a good understanding of the needs of the UMBC student body and would have a direct line of access to the student voice.

How do you intend on fulfilling your role while working alongside other members of SGA? What strategies do you use to address conflict?

Respecting the voices around you is important in positions where your work has an impact on a larger group. I intend to make sure those around me understand that our actions are for a bigger purpose and that proper communication with one another is key for a functioning SGA. Through my past leadership experience I have been able to put my listening skills to use by examining areas of confliction as they rise to understand and help put them to rest before they get out of hand. I will work to make sure that differences in opinion or work strategy does not impact SGAs ability to get things done.

What is your vision for UMBC and the UMBC student body?

I envision a UMBC that is an extension of the things that already make it great, while fostering an environment where students are able to speak on the changes they hope to see on campus and having those ideas come to light. Navigating a post-covid world might be a challenging task for students which is why I intend to build community and increase engagement to help unify the student body and ensure they are well supported through this transitory period. My ultimate goal is to represent the student body effectively; if students' needs are being met through SGA action then that is indicative of a cohesive and well represented body.

How do you plan to facilitate communications with your constituents?

Communication between members holding office and their constituents is vital for SGA and a well informed student body. I plan on taking advantage of all available digital communication avenues including social media so that contact is easy and accessible for students. Additionally, students will be able to voice their concerns directly in my weekly office hours sessions. Through this, I will be able to ensure that students are heard and that my work reflects the student body's needs.
