Milan Sulibhavi

for Senator

What relevant experience would you bring to the position you are seeking?

I am currently serving as the coordinator of alumni relations in SGA in the department of extended connections. This role has given a great amount of experience in terms of the way SGA is run and how I can bring my initiatives into fruition. During my time as coordinator of alumni relations, I worked on an alumni-student mentorship program that will potentially turn into a pilot program. This position has taught me how to think outside of the box to find ways to improve our campus and make UMBC a safe and inclusive space for all.

How do you intend on fulfilling your role while working alongside other members of SGA? What strategies do you use to address conflict?

I want to be a leader as much as a listener. Although I have a strong and empowering voice, a good leader will also listen to others to make an impacting difference. Making sure people are heard is the first and most important tactic to use when addressing conflict because conflict usually arises when others’ opinions and ideas aren’t being heard. My team of senators, SGA, and students will have my full attention and I will hear them with no judgment. I am here to help and that is why I am applying for this role of senator.

What is your vision for UMBC and the UMBC student body?

My vision for UMBC is to make this institution the most inclusive and progressive campus in the nation. Though this is not an easy achievement, I believe it is possible, and I want to be a part of that change. I hope to bridge the gap between SGA and the students by asking more of the student body their opinions on matters that affect the campus they live and learn on. College is said to be one of the happiest times in one’s life, and I want to ensure we do everything possible to make that happen. I am currently working on a leadership scholarship alongside our SGA president that will recognize student leaders on campus and reward them for their hard work and leadership. I think this initiative is important in my vision for UMBC because I want to make this campus accessible to all and helping financially is a step in the right direction.

How do you plan to facilitate communications with your constituents?

I plan to communicate on a regular basis and be as welcoming as possible. I want people to feel heard and therefore, all my forms of communication will be checked and updated on a regular basis. I plan to use simple language when speaking so everyone can understand. and I will ensure understanding by pausing for questions.
