Cultural Reflexion Papers
Reflexiones culturales
Reflexiones culturales
In addition to learning Spanish, you will learn about many cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world throughout the course. These aspects can be products or practices or even perspectives or values.
In order to develop a deeper understanding of culture and avoid creating stereotypes and misconceptions, one needs not only to learn about them but also to reflect on these cultural aspects and to try to identify the perspectives or the values they may represent. Having this knowledge will help you appreciate and communicate more effectively with other speakers of Spanish.
Therefore, you will write two original 450-500-word essays in English in which you analyze a cultural aspect of your choice learned in the course.
IMPORTANT: Do not submit past reflexiones culturales from previous Spanish classes. Doing this is a form of Academic violation.
ALSO:
Although the use of GenAI tools can definitely support learning for other types of assignments in other areas of study, please note that the purpose of these assignments is for you to show your own ability and knowledge to make connections between your culture and aspects of Hispanic culture. Why? Because by YOU making these connections YOU will become more aware, knowledgable, and inter-culturally competent. Doing this will support your ability to use Spanish in the real world in appropriate ways. That is exactly the purpose of you taking this course, right?
Relying on GenAI tools to do these assignments or any other ones in which you are supposed to use your own knowledge and ability, undermines the opportunity to develop this essential knowledge and ability, and to show your genuine progress in the language. Make the money and time you are investing in this class worthy, and let's strive for valuing authentic learning!
Where do you get the information you'll need? You'll see that tons of cultural information are embedded in this course! You'll learn about cultural products and practices in your class activities, your instructor's stories, and in many of the homework assignments. Sections of your textbook such as Primer Contacto or Empezar and homework assignments such as Conectamos nuestras culturas/Viajar, the videos, the movie, the books, and the project El español en Chicago are some of the sources you may want to use to analyze a cultural aspect of the Hispanic world and write your reflexión cultural paper.
You can find more information about the nature of these assignments as well as the evaluation criteria on Blackboard.
