Inside Terry James RC: STARS/EPALA program sees hundreds of students reading for fun
Last year, the Terry James Resource Centre (TJRC) launched the STARS/EPALA (Students Taking Action Reading Solo / Élèves prennent action en lecteur autonome) program. This year, they decided to run it again and saw great student participation.
This program was started to motivate and engage students in reading for pleasure. Other program goals included achieving K-12 literacy and French as a Second Language (FSL) curriculum expectations, highlighting and celebrating diverse literary voices and using the program as a chance to define and enrich the UGDSB’s reading culture.
This year, the STARS/EPALA program saw 635 students participate, 28 classrooms participate and over 98,348 minutes (the equivalent of 2 months 1 week) spent reading.

A look inside the love of learning for TJRC staff
This November, Terry James Resource Centre staff want to highlight the importance of their continued learning when it comes to working in a library setting.
According to UGDSB Cataloguer Sheri Herbert, school “libraries are an ever-changing resource that require constant knowledge updates to be able to adequately serve our customers.” Due to this knowledge, TJRC staff continually participate in PD activities to bring back to their positions and help educate their peers.

Celebrating School Library Day at the TJRC
October 23 was Canadian School Library Day and the UGDSB’s Terry James Resource Centre celebrated with their “School Libraries are not Extinct” Open House.
Staff at the Board Office popped by the TJRC to participate and interact with each learning activity at their designated stations and through participating in those challenges could win prizes for their classroom.

COMING SOON: TJRC Takeover for Canadian School Library Day
Canadian School Library Day is celebrated this year on Monday, October 23.
We are excited to support staff in learning more about the incredible things happening in school Learning Commons across the board, as well as the services and supports available right here at TJRC.
Because of the festivities planned, the Media Centre at TJRC will be closed to visitors on October 23 - the space and services will reopen the following day at 8:00am. Please plan accordingly and contact media.centre@ugdsb.on.ca with any questions or concerns.

Heading back to school with TJRC
As we approach the start of the new school year, the Terry James Resource Centre wanted to remind you of some of the many resources available to staff and students throughout the school year.
Returning UG staff will be pleased to know that as of August 28, 2023, TJRC is returning to its regular operating hours:
Monday through Thursday: 8:00 am to 5:30 pm
Friday: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
Closed weekends and holidays

7 Fun Facts about the Terry James Resource Centre
The Terry James Resource Centre offers Upper Grand staff and students so many resources, including ones that are available all summer. Learn more about the TJRC below:
The services and resources provided at TJRC are available to all active UGDSB staff – whether you are an educator, an administrator, or a member of a board department, the TJRC is here to help you do what you do best.
The TJRC’s collection of inquiry-based learning kits supports the curriculum across elementary and secondary – but it doesn’t stop there. The kits can be used for icebreakers in staff meetings or problem-solving activities for team building.
The TJRC is named in memory of Terry James, who worked as the Communications Officer at the former Wellington County Board of Education from 1987 to 1993, when she passed away after a lengthy struggle with cancer. Terry was a highly respected professional and a model of courage to all who knew her.
TJRC resources include professional development and personal wellness books to support staff in developing skills for success in life – whatever that looks like to you.
The Media Centre offers full and half-size poster and banner printing services. Use these materials in the classroom for educational purposes, or for training sessions, department meetings, staff socials…the sky’s the limit.
The eBooks and audiobooks available in Sora have great accessibility features to make reading even more enjoyable – think high contrast mode, dyslexia-friendly font, and more.
TJRC staff are available Monday through Friday throughout the school year and summer. If you can’t visit the Guelph board office person, you can contact the team via phone or email – sometimes they can even come to you!

Summer resources for UGDSB students and staff
The school year may be coming to an end, but staff at the Terry James Resource Centre (TJRC) want to remind you that students and staff can still access many wonderful resources over the summer.
UG students and staff can access the ‘always available’ resources all summer. These resources include eBooks and audiobooks on Sora for all ages, interests, and reading levels, videos and documentaries on Curio and ON-Core. Staff can also access the Professional Learning eLibrary. All of these great digital resources can be accessed through the TJRC website (for staff only) or UGCloud landing page (for students).

TJRC hosts two PD events for board staff
Earlier this month Terry James Resource Centre (TJRC) staff hosted two Professional Development (PD) sessions for Upper Grand Teacher Librarians and Library Technicians.
The first of their kind since before the COVID-19 pandemic, the goal of each of these PD events was to give teacher librarians a supportive space for peer-to-peer learning, collaboration and to help aid in the building of leadership skills.

Children not allowed in the TJRC at this time
Although staff have been allowed to bring their children into the TJRC in the past, our procedures have recently changed and this is no longer the case – we are available for UGDSB staff use only.
Since the board office is a place of business, our space and services at the Terry James Resource Centre have not been designed with young people in mind – we cannot guarantee the safety or supervision of children on site.
We know this is a significant change and we recognize that for some folks it could present a barrier to accessing our services and resources. Please know that we are still committed to supporting you!
Contact Lauren Bull directly (lauren.bull@ugdsb.on.ca) if you require an accommodation and we will work together to determine a good solution.
