Each dining location has its own hours of operation to serve the students, faculty, staff, parents, guests and visitors who come to UCSC. Your manager will post the hours of operation and the work schedules. Your work schedule is designed to provide coverage for a complex schedule of dining services which operates 7 days a week from early morning to late at night.
Attendance and adherence to work schedules is necessary to maintain high quality food and customer service. Your co-workers count on you to complete your assigned tasks. Managers will assign employee work schedules based upon the requirements of each unit. Employees are required to enter and exit through a designated doorway.
There may be times when department operations required varied work schedules, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends and shifts that may extend beyond the typical 8 hour work day. Also, employees may be required to change work locations on a daily basis or for an indefinite time. Employees will be given as much notice as possible of either a temporary or a permanent change in work schedule.
Work Schedule: Only a Shift Lead or a manager can make changes to the schedule.
Use of time: While you are on duty, personal activities are not permitted (examples: phone use, web surfing, pager use, visiting, socializing, etc.)
To ensure adequate staffing levels, units may impose requirements for a student employees work schedule (ie requiring a Late Night or Opening shift, requiring a certain position be worked, etc)
Additionally, student employees must maintain a minimum number of hours on their work schedule.
Level 1s - at least 9 hours per week
Shift Leads (Level 2s and 3s) - at least 12 hours per week
Foodies - 9-15 hours per week
If a student employee does not meet the minimum number of hours required for their positions, they will be given one warning to adjust their schedule.
After a warning is giving, if a student employee continues to not meet their weekly minimum requirement, they may be taken off the schedule and separated from their employment with Dining & Hospitality Services.
Student employees with Dining & Hospitality Services are only permitted to work up to 30 hours per work week. (30 total hours, inclusive of any sick leave and holiday pay)
There may be instances in which a student employee has more than 30 hours on their timesheet due to pay for their Required Online Trainings. This is the only circumstance in which there may be more than 30 hours in a week on a student timesheet.
Student employees may also not work more than 6 consecutive days or more than 8 paid hours in a single day.
Employees are required to clock in and out as per their posted work schedule. Additionally, employees are required to clock out and in at meal periods. At the end of each pay cycle, CruzPay will remind you to review and submit your timesheet. Notify your manager if anything is missing or incorrect.
You may not clock in or out for another employee; doing so is a falsification of the time record. Time worked is reported to the nearest 1/4 hour.
Employees are paid on a biweekly pay cycle and are paid every other week on Wednesday.
You are responsible for checking your timesheet for accuracy and submitting your timesheet electronically at the end of the pay period. You will receive an automated email from the CruzPay system notifying you when you should approve your timesheet. The pay period is from Sunday-Saturday, though you will receive the automated email on Friday before the pay period ends. You must wait until the end of the pay period (Saturdays) at the end of your shift to approve your timesheet.
Your paycheck will be sent to your affiliated college office. It is highly recommended that you sign up for Direct Deposit (which you may do at https://ucpath.universityofcalifornia.edu).
If you are considering resigning from your position, please discuss your situation with a manager.
Should you decide to resign, a two week written notice is prefered.
Failure to give two weeks’ notice may disqualify you from future employment at any UCSC Dining location.
We will begin to get your shifts covered immediately upon receiving your two weeks’ notice. This means that you may lose your hours quickly or continue to work your assigned shifts for the entire two weeks, depending on our ability to get them covered.
