Does Proximity to Campus Correlate with Off-campus Students’ Sense of Belonging?
This study examined how off-campus students' proximity to campus relates to their sense of belonging, defined as a feeling of inclusion and connection within a community.
A total of 83 off-campus students enrolled in a Research Methods of Psychology course at UCSC participated in the study. Results indicated a significant, moderate negative correlation between proximity to campus and sense of belonging, showing that students who live closer to campus report a higher sense of belonging, while those who live farther away report a lower sense of belonging.
Understanding this relationship is important for colleges in order to provide additional support to off-campus students who may feel less connected, potentially improving their academic performance and social engagement.
