Exploring Ties between Santa Cruz’s Housing Crisis & Student's Institutional Commitment at UCSC

PSYC100_Finding 11.pdf

Our research investigates the relationship between housing insecurity (HI) and institutional commitment (IC) among undergraduate students at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). The study involved 188 participants recruited from a Research Methods course, primarily composed of third- and fourth-year students. The participants completed a self-report survey, including measures of HI (Goldrick-Rab, 2018; Kornbluh et al., 2022) and IC (Davidson et al., 2009).

The results indicated a statistically significant weak and negative correlation between HI and IC, suggesting that higher levels of HI may be associated with lower levels of commitment to the educational institution. The study draws on a literature review that emphasizes the broader impact of HI on academic performance, mental health, and overall well-being, supporting the need for further research to inform preventive measures and interventions. The findings contribute to understanding the complex issue of HI and its implications for students' commitment to their academic pursuits.
