How does UCSC Students’ Participation in Community Events Relate to Students’ Sense of Belonging?
When students are able to develop a strong sense of belonging within their school, it can improve both their mental health and academic performance (Almukdad & Karadag, 2024). While many factors may influence a student’s sense of belonging, this study focused on student engagement within the campus community, specifically through participation in campus events.
A survey was conducted with 192 UCSC psychology undergraduates that assessed students’ levels of campus engagement and their sense of belonging at UCSC. The results revealed a moderate positive relationship between these factors, indicating that students who actively attended campus opportunities and connected with others were more likely to report a stronger sense of belonging.
These findings suggest that participation in accessible and meaningful community-building resources plays an important role in strengthening students’ sense of belonging.
