🍇 Mission A2: Find the Fairy Fruit

Overview

What will happen:

This mission encourages Trainees to make decisions that will help impact the future of the human/fairy alliance by using their wearables to gather information. Trainees will program UV LED strips to determine which Fairy Berries (see Material Requirements for directions) are safe for the Fairy Royal to eat, with some assistance from the Courtly Fairy.

If you do not wish to use UV LEDs, an alternative task to UV can make use of the magnetic field sensor to detect hidden objects. (replace Lights & Colors 02 with Sensors 01)

The learning and design outcome of this mission is to get the campers to explore other functionality of the hardware by creating a wearable that can be used to detect or distinguish between items they can't with the naked eye while experimenting with designing interfaces for wearable electronics.

Trainee's Mission Objective:

Students will gain confidence in their skills to use UV LED light strips to discern between poisonous nightshade berries and regular fairy berries. A skill that now carries the weight of a potentially (though fictional) life or death consequence, and a “correct” answer, not nebulous like the fashionability of wearables made in previous Mission 01.

NPC Courtly Fairy Script Direction

"If only someone could help me magically sort these Fairy Berries. I have so much on my plate you know, and I am not so much a green thumb with plant magics. Do you think you could help me? You know, if you bring such a fine gift for the Fairy Royal. I can guarantee you an invite to the Birthday Ball.”

                                                                  - Courtly Fairy”

Tone and advice for success

As long as Trainees have a costume that looks a little bit like a fairy and has an LED strand that lights up, they’ve succeeded.

If they’re having difficulty, prompt their peers to help them with coding their electronics or prompt them with some ideas that will help them look more fairy-like.

Look at the Design Bodystorming material for inspiration.

Mission Success Criteria

[1] Choose the Correct Fairy Fruit

If Trainees meet [GOAL 1]

Then, the Courtly Fairy will gladly take the fruit as a gift to the Fairy Prince, establishing the trainees of the list of birthday invitees

If Trainees need a little help with [GOAL 1]

Then, the Courtly Fairy will applaud the trainees for still being so considerate to their needs and will prompt them to come back later as he might have another idea on how to get them an audience with the prince.
