6 Mentoring Practices

1 hour

This module is adapted from the work at the University of Washington, College of Education. One of our UCI professors, Dr. Hosun Kang, is part of this collaboration to improve the clinical experience for student teachers. The resources accessible through their website match the UCI philosophy on mentoring practices, so we decided to make this into one "mega module". Completing this entire module counts for 6 hours of professional development for mentor teachers.

The art of mentoring consists of 6 practices.

- Making your thinking explicit

- Analyzing student work together

- Co-planning with feedback

- Pre-briefing and Debriefing

- Modeling the work of teaching

- Co-teaching

Each of these 6 practices are explained in this short video.

After watching the video, have a conversation with your student teacher about these practices. Decide on one mentoring practice to use each week.

Video content for this module was developed by a collaboration of researchers and is supported by the NSF.
