- Apply knowledge of students, including their prior experiences, interests, and social-emotional learning needs, as well as their funds of knowledge and cultural, language, and socioeconomic backgrounds, to engage them in learning. (1.1)
-Connects to student interests (1.3)
Promotes critical thinking (1.5)
Uses ELD, SDAIE strategies (1.6)
Monitors and adjusts instruction (1.8)
● Connecting to student interest: Doing a survey at few times a year via an opening exercise, getting a hold of an event calendar from ASB, current
events in the world or pop culture. Be observant to the fashion, what they talk about, eat, buy, consume, write on their notebooks, the stickers they put on their water bottles, the hairstyles, what they talk about when adults aren't around and the music they listen to. Become an observer of this age group and what excites them, concerns them, brings joy, brings frustration. This is a great opportunity for warm up sketches that are prompted by these questions. Think about a daily check in that is done with images and colors rather than words.
● Allow STUDENTS to resource and define vocabulary, art history and even explore media BEFORE doing demo or telling them what each thing is. A
great strategy is Google Slides, put students in groups and give them different ideas, words, skills to define. Place finding in slides and present to class.
● Everything should be written ( preferably by students for memory), presented in a graphic (picture) and spoken. If teacher can think of way to
apply it to movement of some sort, even moving around the room, the lasting impression on the memory through the body is a fantastic tool.
● Have in mind a few ways to simplify the lesson for beginners or IEP/504 students that need modifications as well as for those students that need
more of a challenge. Keep the objective the same and the inetnion, just modify the materials or skill levels. Do this for every lesson.
