Clinical Attire and Scrub Requirements
As part of the Faculty of Nursing, all students are required to wear maroon-colored scrubs for their clinical placements. These scrubs can be purchased through sales hosted by the UofA bookstore, and students will be notified of these sales via email. Alternatively, students may choose to purchase scrubs from a retailer of their choice, provided they meet the uniform guidelines.
Important Notes:
Scrubs must be worn for the start of clinical placements. For After Degree students, this begins in the Winter of Year 1. For Collaborative and Bilingual students, this starts in the Fall of Year 2.
This means that you are NOT required to have scrubs at the very start of your program. You have time to purchase them before you absolutely need to have them -- so if you don't want to buy them right away, you don't have to.
Your uniform will depend on the course/clinical setting.
Acute Care / Hospital-Based Settings: maroon scrubs.
Community Health Settings: maroon scrubs or business casual wear. Please follow up with your instructor for more information.
Mental Health Settings: depending on the unit you may be required to wear maroon scrubs or business casual wear. Please follow up with your instructor.
Note: Previously, scrubs with the UofA embroidery on the sleeve have been permitted and will still be allowed throughout the program however the embroidery is not a requirement.
In addition to the maroon-colored scrubs, students will be provided with a Faculty of Nursing magnetic pin that is designed to be worn on the chest, and with which you could attach your nursing ID badge to it. This pin will act as the identifying marker for students in the program, along with the designated scrub color. One pin will be provided to students along with their nursing ID badges at the start of their clinicals, and if students wish to purchase more they can through the University Bookstore.
You can review this Faculty of Nursing Approved Scrub Color document for details on various scrub brands that the approved colors for students to purchase. You can also find the HEX color code for the Faculty of Nursing Scrubs here.
If you have any questions regarding uniform requirements or if you are unsure about any details, please reach out through the Student Service Portal for further clarification.
You can review the Undergraduate Nursing Programs Student Manual for more information on guidelines for clinical attire, and more.
Nursing Equipment
The University Bookstore (in the Students’ Union Building) carries a wide variety of equipment in various styles and price ranges including stethoscopes, penlights and bandage scissors.
Students can purchase a stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, and a penlight at the time of admission. Other items may be required over the duration of the program. This information will be included in your course outline.
Clinical ID Badges
You will receive a Faculty of Nursing Clinical Identification (ID) badge that is valid for the duration of the program. In order to receive an ID for your clinical placement, you are required to upload a photo for your ONEcard. You will receive your ID badge prior to your first clinical placement by a member of the Faculty of Nursing. An announcement will be made via eClass.
It is strongly recommended that students purchase a cardholder for their Clinical ID badge to protect it from damage and fading. Cardholders can be purchased from the One Card Office. ID Badges are very delicate and should not be cleaned using harsh chemicals. Please do not use bleach or alcohol wipes on your card as this contributes to fading.
Damaged (including faded), lost or stolen ID badges can be replaced by emailing nuclnit@ualberta.ca. Students are responsible for any associated fees for the replacement.
