Spreadsheet Lesson Framework

The purpose of this activity is to demonstrate how using Google Sheets can be an effective way to collect, organize, and store research data.

As an example, I created a survey to find out what type of device(s) and operating system(s) the participants use.

Description:

For this activity, adult students will create an online survey using Google Forms to collect data from 20 or more people on their selected research topic. The data results will be collected into an attached spreadsheet. Using Google Sheets, each student will be required to compile their data into visual representations such as graphs, diagrams, charts, etc. They will present their findings to the class and explain how this process plays an important role in UX research.

Goals:

Students will be able to:

                  • Create online surveys.
                  • Distribute surveys to participants by email, text, social media, and other platforms.
                  • Create a Google Sheet to combine with their Google Form survey.
                  • Understand the framework and structure of using a spreadsheet.
                  • Organize research results.
                  • Utilize Google Sheets tools to create visual graphs, diagrams, and charts to showcase the survey data.

Data Description:

The data collected from the surveys are related to the students selected research topic. This survey is being used as a method to help collect research data that students will be using for their research projects.

Column data is related to the students selected questions in the survey. Row data is the responses from the survey participants. In my example, I created a survey to ask about the survey takers use of devices and platforms they use.

Each student is required to collect survey responses from 20 or more participants. The data collected must relate to their research topic, and be able to present their findings in visual form to the class.
