Step 1:
Collect all binders with a flag in the binder spine and take them to the instructor computer area. They may be color-coded like the ones shown below, or they may all be the same color and say "Needs Update.”
Step 2:
Determine why the binder needs to be updated. Does the student need new Warm Ups or an Assessment? Have they finished an Assessment that needs to be graded? Does the binder need a new cover and spine because the student leveled up, or a torn divider replaced?
First, consult with your Center Director or a Lead Instructor about the most appropriate new Warm Up for that student. Then:
Locate Google Drive on the desktop in either a desktop icon or along the taskbar (or find the SharedDrive bookmarked in Chrome).
Desktop Icon
Taskbar Icon
Next, select SharedDrive.
Select Students.
Select Warm Ups.
From the “Warmupsv3” folder inside, select the appropriate Warm Up and print it on colored paper.
Please check with your Center Director or a Lead Instructor about the specific procedure for your center. In the event you are tasked with grading the assessment:
Grading Assessments
Understand How to Evaluate a Student Assessment
At Mathnasium, we believe in teaching students for understanding, in a way that makes sense to them. An important part of accomplishing this is being able to evaluate student work based on both the product as well as the process. Both of these factors provide context for the Center Director to develop an appropriate Learning Plan for the student. A thorough Assessment evaluation should have three steps:
Correct the student’s work using appropriate Answer Key(s).
Evaluate incorrect answers for careless vs. conceptual mistakes.
Enter the Assessment Results into Radius for future reference.
Correct the Assessment
Using the appropriate Answer Key(s), correct all Assessments the student worked on. While the Answer Keys can be found on the tablets, the most error-proof way is to use the Answer Key directly from the Student Manager in Radius. Take a look at the example below:
This student is taking post-Checkup 7 and pre-Computation Checkup. Radius already knows this, thus eliminating the guesswork - the first time a student takes a given Assessment, Radius assigns the pre-Checkup, and the second time the same Assessment is assigned to that student, Radius defaults to the post-Checkup. We print pre-Checkups on blue paper and post-Checkups on green paper to visually distinguish them in the student’s binder. Radius will automatically provide the correct Answer Key for the assigned Checkup.
DO NOT use paper copies of Answer Keys, as these are updated often in Radius and paper copies do not reflect updates. ALWAYS use a key when correcting an Assessment, regardless of level.
Evaluate the Assessment
When evaluating an Assessment, the following information can help the Center Director determine whether or not a student has demonstrated appropriate Mastery of a skill or concept:
Determine whether incorrect answers are careless or conceptual mistakes.
A careless mistake is one in which the student was able to demonstrate understanding of a concept or skill, but made small computational errors not associated with the skill being addressed.
A conceptual mistake is one in which the student is unable to demonstrate an understanding of the concept or skill being addressed.
Place a small C on the Assessment next to a problem number that contains a careless mistake. This will help inform which PKs actually make it into the student’s final Learning Plan.
Enter Assessment Results into Radius
From the same screen where the Answer Key is found, enter and save the results into Radius. Check with your Center Director for information regarding partial credit.
Finally, return the Assessment and student binder to your Center Director for Learning Plan creation.
The student has leveled up! In order to properly indicate so in their binder, you will need a binder spine and cover of the next level, as well as a label maker. Then:
Label the new spine and cover with the student's name.
Remove the old cover and replace it with the new one. Recycle or throw away the old cover.
Remove the old spine and put it in the front pocket of the binder. The student can choose to keep it or get rid of it at the beginning of their next session.
Insert the new spine, but leave enough of it sticking out that the student will be able to easily remove it and decorate it at the beginning of their next session.
Replace or reinforce any ripped dividers.
If the Completed section is overly full, remove some of the oldest pages.
Finally, return the updated binders to the shelf!
