from the scoutmaster

Welcome back to a great year of Scouting with Troop 77!

It’s been a busy summer for the troop with 2 successful June meetings, a large Philmont contingent, and a week at Camp Daniel Boone amidst the usual summer fun of swim team, summer class assignments, and family vacations.

Big congrats to our 4 Philmont crews, who backpacked between 70 and 160 miles during their 12- day treks. Congratulations are also in order to SPL Cadhan Cole, his camp senior patrol, and the rest of the troop for successfully earning the Long Rifle honor troop award at Camp Daniel Boone. T77 scouts assembled early for every flag ceremony/campfire and completed countless merit badges while adults hiked, swam, shot, and rafted and completed training in Wilderness First Aid and IOLS. Thanks to all Philmont and Daniel Boone adult leaders for serving before or during the trips—without you, neither of these summer adventures would’ve happened.

PARTIAL MERIT BADGES - Scouts, if you came home from CDB with partials, it’s your job to find a merit badge counselor to complete the badge. For more info, visit the troop Merit Badge page or connect with Mr. Brewer if you have any questions.

FIRST PLC IS TOMORROW NIGHT - The Patrol Leaders Council (PLC) will meet at 6:00P tomorrow night in Scout Hall. If you are on the PLC, attendance is mandatory and failure to attend may result in loss of credit for your Position of Responsibility (PoR).  If you have a question whether or not your existing PoR is required to attend the PLC, contact SPL Cadhan Cole

FIRST WEEKLY TROOP MEETING IS TOMORROW NIGHT - 7:30P to 9P.  The theme this week is tents, featuring skills instruction and a fun game with candy prizes.

ASM ROUNDTABLE AUG 16, 6:00P - All ASMs and Unit Scouter Reserves should attend to discuss Adult roles and Troop Programming needs. (Note: in most months, ASM RTs are the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 6:30 - this month is an exception.)

COMMITTEE MEETING AUG 23, 6:30P - All are welcome to attend the Committee Meeting. (Note that in most months, CMs are the 3rd Tuesday of the month.)

REGULARLY CHECK THE TROOP CALENDAR & READ THE WEEKLY NEWSLETTER - Please make sure both you and your Scouts are checking the Troop Calendar and reading the Weekly Troop Newsletter regularly (for newsletter subscriptions, join the Troop Reminds).

CONSISTENT PARTICIPATION - As always, the more a Scout, Adult Leader or Parent participates, the more they will get out of Scouting, and the better our Scouts, Troop, and Scouting overall will be for it. I encourage each of you to get involved or stay involved to the maximum extent possible.  Also, be proud of Scouting and Troop 77, and do not be afraid to introduce or reintroduce your friends, peers, other families, etc. to Scouting and the great experiences and opportunities Troop 77 provides.

Thx! Mrs. Henderson

advancement

Congratulations to the following Scouts who successfully completed their Board of Review for their next rank:

Summer Camp -  The scouts who went to Camp Daniel Boone completed a lot of work and finished many merit badges!  I have entered almost all the summer camp merit badge completions in Scoutbook.  Over the next meeting (or 2), I am looking for parent assistance to get the summer camp completion packets ready to hand out.  This is the fun job of getting the completed merit badge patches ready and the blue cards for each scout who attended summer camp.  It is an easy enough job, just need several people to help make it go more quickly.  If you can help, let me know or just show up at the Advancement Table.

Boards of Review - I also need 3 parent volunteers to hold Board of Reviews for those scouts who have completed all their rank requirements.  It is the last step for their rank.  I have at least 2 Scouts that I know of who need a BOR.  This is something held during the scout meeting and I have a list of questions you can use during the BOR. If there are not get enough volunteers, the scouts have to wait more time to earn their rank patch.  The BOR is an important step of Scouting and they have already done the work for the rank so please consider volunteering to help.  This is something any parent can do - you don't have to be an adult leader to help with the BOR.  Parents if you can help, please go to the sign up genius here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d44aead29a7ff2-troop

Scouts who have completed their Scoutmaster Conference for SCOUT rank and have not yet received your patch, please come see me at the Advancement table with your handbook.  I will get everything processed in Scoutbook and make sure your patch is given to the Scoutmaster to present at the end of the meeting.

If you need a Board of Review for your rank, please go to the Sign Up Genius here:

new eagle required merit badge - citizenship in society

The first new merit badge for youth in the Scouts BSA program since 2017 became Eagle required over the summer.  Called Citizenship in Society, it provides Scouts with opportunities to learn more about our world by encouraging them to explore information on diversity, equity, inclusion and ethical leadership — and to learn why these qualities are important in society and in Scouting.

Troop 77 needs qualified (adult) merit badge instructors to lead Citizenship in Society.  Registration is now open for the next two Citizenship in Society Facilitator training sessions. They will be held on March 12th and April 23rd at the Volunteer Service Center (across from the Braves stadium).  Follow the link to register: https://www.atlantabsa.org/cis-training

Please e-mail Wes Brewer (wesbrewer@hotmail.com) with any questions.

SCOUTMASTER CONFERENCES

Scoutmaster Conferences for Scout, Star, Life and Eagle are conducted by Mr. Cole.  You can sign-up for Scoutmaster Conference for Scout, Star and Life by using the SignUp Genius on the Troop's Website under Scoutmaster Conferences (https://sites.google.com/troop77bsa.com/scout-parent/scoutmaster-conferences?authuser=0) and following the instructions on that webpage.   Scoutmaster Conferences for Eagle can be arranged by emailing Mr. Cole at ctcole0308@gmail.com.  IF YOUR SCOUTMASTER CONFERENCE IS BEFORE 7P, ONE OF YOUR PARENTS MUST BE PREPARED TO STAY FOR THE CONFERENCE (SO THAT WE HAVE TWO ADULTS PRESENT AND NO ONE-ON-ONE CONTACT) SO THAT WE CAN REMAIN YOUTH PROTECTION TRAINING COMPLIANT.

Scoutmaster Conferences for Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class are completed by an Assistant Scoutmaster and should be arranged through the ASM Helpdesk or by contacting Mr. Jensen at garyljensen@gmail.com.

EAGLE COURTS OF HONOR HELP

For anyone (Scouts or Parents) who can volunteer some time to help organize a few things, get things setup, or help take things down at the end of Eagle Courts of Honor, Mrs. Cole could certainly use the help.  It’s not an overwhelming amount of stuff to get done by a team, but it starts to get overwhelming if you are having to do it all by yourself. If you’re interested in helping with the Eagle Courts of Honor please contact Holly Cole (hpcole77@gmail.com or (770) 401-4992) and let her know.  With a big backlog from COVID and being fortunate to have 1-2 Scouts earning Eagle a month, this is a great way to give some time to the Troop on a night other than Tuesdays and a great place to start volunteering.
