7:30P TROOP MEETING

From the SPL

Hey Troop 77 - I hope you had a great weekend and are ready to get back into scouting this Tuesday. The Kraken Patrol are still finalizing their meeting plan but you can expect a presentation on the various roles of patrol members on a camping trip, followed by a fun game.

from the scoutmaster

As those of you that were at last week’s meeting are aware, Alex King ran unopposed for SPL, and for his ASPLs he has selected: Sam Henderson, Smith Jensen, Ryan Shimabukuro, and Evan George. I think it’s a great slate of ASPLs and a solid cross-section of the Troop that will make up the next Senior Patrol.

Reminder that Patrol Leaders will be elected at the Sept 6th meeting, and declarations to run for Patrol Leader are due to Mr. Cole and myself by tomorrow night, August 23rd at 10:00 PM. In your email please let us know if you have taken ILST (date and location) or if you plan to take ILST at University of Scouting on Sept 24th. Electing Patrol Leaders is a very important decision, and I encourage each patrol to have as many members present as possible on Sept 6th.

Many of you have asked when the troop will hand out merit badges earned over the summer. Because there are so many and so much work is required to prepare them, we’ve decided to hand them out on August 30th, the night of our next Court of Honor. Mrs. Todd will then offer sewing at several meetings between early September and our next Court of Honor in December. Check the newsletter weekly for those sewing dates.

Please sign up now for the troop’s September trip, which is a paddling trip on the Etowah River. You can camp both Fri and Sat or just Sat, and either kayak and fish or just tube. The deadline to register is this Friday, Aug 26th at 10P.

The deadline to sign up to volunteer at the Pack 577 Bike Rodeo Service Opportunity (scheduled for this Thursday, August 25th) is tonight (Monday) at 10:00P. I will email parents further details on Tuesday during the day, so please notify your parents to keep an eye out. There will be a meeting for all Rodeo volunteers on Tuesday, 8/23 at 6:45P at the picnic tables outside Youth Hall. Scouts can earn up to 3 service hours through this project and it’s FUN! For more info and to sign up, visit the Bike Rodeo Signup.

The Troop completed its Annual Planning Meeting Summary in May, and the first Revision to that document can be found at the bottom of the Calendar page on the Troop's website or at the following link:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Ry1jKj1T1S6sdc7Ev9piETVCndSzFLWo/view?usp=sharing

I strongly encourage everyone to take a look through the APMS as it has a lot of important future dates for activities, general meeting plans, etc.  In particular, please note the dates for registering for campouts (and if possible, try to register a week or two before that date if you can).  The APMS is a "working document" and it will change several times throughout the year as time passes and more information becomes available about certain events.  We will try to update you when it changes.  You can rely on the meeting and campout dates; although, meeting plans can change and campouts can change location, activity, the day we depart, and times we depart and return, so always rely on the information posted on the Camping/Outings page of the website.  We also do not try to capture all the District, Council, or OA activity dates that are published elsewhere, except those that apply directly to us (e.g., Spring Camporee), so I encourage you to routinely check the calendars for each of those and also look for information in the Newsletter related to them.

Thx! Mrs. Henderson

BIKE RODEO SERVICE OPPORTUNITY

Troop 77 is facilitating a Bike Rodeo on Thursday, August 25th from 5-8P for Cub Scout Pack 577. We need lots of youth and adult volunteers to help starting at 5:00 pm for pre-meeting setup and then running the stations for the actual event. This is a great opportunity for the troop to showcase itself to the pack. After all, cub scouts LOVE being around older scouts!

Mr. Cole and Mrs. Henderson have approved this event as a service hour opportunity.

There will be a pre-Rodeo meeting for all volunteers during the 8/23 troop meeting at 6:45P at the picnic tables outside Youth Hall.

new eagle required merit badge - citizenship in society

The first new merit badge for youth in the Scouts BSA program since 2017 became Eagle required over the summer.  Called Citizenship in Society, it provides Scouts with opportunities to learn more about our world by encouraging them to explore information on diversity, equity, inclusion and ethical leadership — and to learn why these qualities are important in society and in Scouting.

Troop 77 needs qualified (adult) merit badge instructors to lead Citizenship in Society.  Registration is now open for the next two Citizenship in Society Facilitator training sessions. They will be held on March 12th and April 23rd at the Volunteer Service Center (across from the Braves stadium).  Follow the link to register: https://www.atlantabsa.org/cis-training

Please e-mail Wes Brewer (wesbrewer@hotmail.com) with any questions.

SCOUTMASTER CONFERENCES

Scoutmaster Conferences for Scout, Star, Life and Eagle are conducted by Mr. Cole.  You can sign-up for Scoutmaster Conference for Scout, Star and Life by using the SignUp Genius on the Troop's Website under Scoutmaster Conferences (https://sites.google.com/troop77bsa.com/scout-parent/scoutmaster-conferences?authuser=0) and following the instructions on that webpage.   Scoutmaster Conferences for Eagle can be arranged by emailing Mr. Cole at ctcole0308@gmail.com.  IF YOUR SCOUTMASTER CONFERENCE IS BEFORE 7P, ONE OF YOUR PARENTS MUST BE PREPARED TO STAY FOR THE CONFERENCE (SO THAT WE HAVE TWO ADULTS PRESENT AND NO ONE-ON-ONE CONTACT) SO THAT WE CAN REMAIN YOUTH PROTECTION TRAINING COMPLIANT.

Scoutmaster Conferences for Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class are completed by an Assistant Scoutmaster and should be arranged through the ASM Helpdesk or by contacting Mr. Jensen at garyljensen@gmail.com.

EAGLE COURTS OF HONOR HELP

For anyone (Scouts or Parents) who can volunteer some time to help organize a few things, get things setup, or help take things down at the end of Eagle Courts of Honor, Mrs. Cole could certainly use the help.  It’s not an overwhelming amount of stuff to get done by a team, but it starts to get overwhelming if you are having to do it all by yourself. If you’re interested in helping with the Eagle Courts of Honor please contact Holly Cole (hpcole77@gmail.com or (770) 401-4992) and let her know.  With a big backlog from COVID and being fortunate to have 1-2 Scouts earning Eagle a month, this is a great way to give some time to the Troop on a night other than Tuesdays and a great place to start volunteering.
