Camp Daniel Boone
Summer Camp 2022
welcome to the the summer camp webpage!
UPDATED JULY 16, 2022
Things to Do
Take a COVID test and submit results by 5:30 p.m. tonight. See info in the next section about COVID as well as the link to submit test results.
Be at the OGUMC gym today for the mandatory check-in! Come anytime between 4:00-6:00 p.m. and wear a mask.
Scouts should print a copy of the camp map and bring it in their daypack with their other essentials. Daypacks should ride with each Scout in cars on the way up and back down.
Scouts must read through these 3 documents. Scouts should have reviewed these in the past and turned in a signed copy. If they have not turned in a signed copy, now is a good time to do that!
Sunday, July 17: meet at 8:00 am at Oak Grove Elementary (the school, not the church) so we can depart on time! Be sure to wear Class A uniforms as we do for all Scout-related travel. Neckerchiefs should be left at home. Those doing swim test or HA should pack in a way that their gear is accessible upon arrival.
Bring money for lunch on the way up and return trip as well as for the week of camp!
Drivers
Please drive slowly as you go through the Pisgah Camping Club near CDB. Drivers should plan to meet at Bethel Baptist Church parking lot (5868 Pigeon Road, Canton NC 28716) ahead of arriving to camp so we can arrive as a unit.
Things to Know
The nights are cool, the afternoons are warm and the 'no-see-um' bugs are still hungry. Plan accordingly. Remember all sunscreen/bug spray should be aerosol-free.
Reminder that Scouts should wash their hands before every meal and leave appropriate distance when waiting near the concrete steps in front of the dining hall.
Be sure to review previous updates and COVID info below!!
COVID DETAILS (UPDATED JULY 11, 2022)
COVID POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
We would like to make sure you are aware of the Covid precautions that we are adopting which includes specific requirements from Camp Daniel Boone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUHOz6maB-M
These precautions are intended to protect campers as best as we practically can from communicable diseases known to occur in summer camps.
Pre-departure:
· Please monitor for symptoms of a communicable disease for 72 hours before departure. See list of symptoms below. If these symptoms are present, please do not attend camp. This stipulation comes directly from Camp Daniel Boone.
· All participants irrespective of vaccination status are required to provide proof of a negative Covid test (PCR or Rapid) taken within 3 days of departure to Camp Daniel Boone. ( July 14th, 15th or 16th - No later than 5:30pm on Saturday July 16th )
***Please upload an image of the participant's negative covid test (rapid or PCR) using this link: https://forms.gle/8DuEQLS8a5zft9CZ6 and indicate date and time it was done.
*** If you’re absolutely unable to upload using the provided link, please a text message to 404 973 8631 with : 1) name of attendee 2)if the attendee has any symptoms and 3) an image of the negative Covid test.
· If the participant reports symptoms of new nasal congestion or mild non-specific new symptoms beyond those listed below, please perform a PCR test even if a rapid test is negative. Please do not attend camp if the participant has any of the listed symptoms below.
· The use of masks in indoor spaces or during transportation by car is optional and left to the discretion of parents and participants. Given that a large number of scouts will be sharing rides in designated cars, mandatory Covid testing prior to departure will help protect each other.
In Camp protocol:
· Camp Daniel Boone Health lodge staff will speak with each camper upon arrival to ensure that they are feeling healthy. If there are any concerns at screening, the camper will be pulled aside for a more in-depth assessment.
· Campers who develop symptoms at Camp Daniel Boone will be tested for Covid 19 and be sent home if positive. Any symptoms consistent with a communicable disease will require the camper to be isolated and sent home or higher level of medical care if necessary. Other close contacts will be monitored for symptoms while at Camp Daniel Boone.
Post Camp:
· Please monitor for symptoms for 7 days after returning from camp. If you develop symptoms and test positive for Covid-19 within 7 days after camp, please contact Troop 77 summer camp medical officers to let us know at pkandiah@gmail.com
Symptom Monitoring:
Monitor for symptoms 72 hours before camp. If you have these symptoms or exposures, PLEASE STAY HOME. This is a requirement from Camp Daniel Boone.
1. Fever over 99.5
2. Cough
3. Unusual Fatigue
4. Difficulty breathing
5. Chills
6. New loss of taste or smell
7. Unexplained muscle aches
8. Sore throat
9. Persistent new headache
10. Vomiting
11. Diarrhea
12. Positive Covid 19 Diagnosis
13. Being recently exposed to anyone with communicable disease.
At-home tests are acceptable and are readily available.
· At-home tests are readily available everywhere right now, and most insurance plans will reimburse the purchase price. Free tests are also available through USPS here: https://special.usps.com/testkits. Some prescription plans will deliver tests to your home at no cost. For example, Express Scripts will provide up to 8 tests per insured person per month: https://www.express-scripts.com/covid-19/resource-center.
These precautions are aimed at mitigating the spread of Covid-19 or other communicable disease. The lag in the ability of a rapid test to detect Covid-19 in mild symptoms or asymptomatic infections somewhat limits the effectiveness of this strategy. This is however the most practical and objective approach we have at this time. Please contact Prem Kandiah pkandiah@gmail.com with any questions or concerns. Prem Kandiah and Jeff Rogers will be serving as Troop 77 medical officers for summer camp.

Any Scout or adult taking the swim test (including participants of the mile swim or polar bear plunge) should have swim gear ready for Sunday afternoon shortly after arrival.
Covid Pre-Planning and Monitoring
Updated July 11: Please review all details and requirements in the Covid section below on this page.
All participants will go through a health screening as a part of the Saturday, July 16 check-in. Scouts and adults must be symptom free and in good health in order to travel to camp. Please note that Camp Daniel Boone also conducts health screenings upon arrival.
As a reminder, camp requires the use of face masks at different times throughout the day. Be sure to pack several masks that can stand up to weather/rain. Also, keep one handy on the day of departure as mask use may be necessary while driving to and from camp.
Please review the additional Camp Daniel Boone Covid protocols on page 3 of the 2022 Parent's Guide.
Departure and Transportation To/From Camp
The troop will assemble on Sunday, July 17 at 8a, with an estimated departure at 9a. We will meet at Oak Grove Elementary (the school, not the church). Be sure to wear Class A uniforms as we do for all Scout-related travel. Neckerchiefs should be left at home.
All attending Scouts have been accounted for in regards to transportation in vehicles of attending adult leaders. Parents will not need to drive their Scouts to and from camp. Scouts will be assigned vehicles and details will be provided prior to departure from the Oak Grove Elementary parking lot no later than 9a on Sunday morning.
Scouts will depart from camp no later than 9a on Saturday, July 23. The drive is 3 to 3.5 hours and may change based on traffic. ETA is around 1-1:30p and Scouts will then need to stay an additional 30-60 min in order to assist with unloading equipment. Please stay tuned to the Remind app for details on arrival times.
Those doing High Adventure should pack gear in vehicles so that upon arrival at Camp Daniel Boone they can separate gear.
Packing Reminders
Be sure to review the packing details in the 'packing' section below on this page.
Scouts should plan to use 'action-packer' style storage containers that are clearly labeled. Be sure to also label ALL equipment Scouts bring to camp.
As a reminder, there is no electricity at any camp sites. Scouts and adults should plan accordingly with plenty of batteries for headlamps, flashlights, etc.
Photos: Adults with phones and Scouts with non-phone cameras will take lots of photos and share as soon as possible. There is no cell coverage at camp, so there may be a delay in sharing photos.
Mail at Camp
If you wish to send mail to Scouts please see the 'mail call' section below on this page for the address and details.
Per the CDB website: All letters received at Camp must be labeled with the Scout’s correct Troop number in order to ensure delivery. Please include a return address on any mail that will come into camp so that it may be returned to sender if not picked up at the end of the week. Due to our remote location, mail sent to Camp Daniel Boone can take up to a week to arrive, so please plan accordingly.
We are looking forward to a great time at camp. See everyone at our check-in meeting on Saturday, July 16!

Some info from Camp Daniel Boone . . . .
Age requirement? The "Age Requirement" on the Camp Daniel Boone info is not a requirement, but a recommendation. Info from Camp Daniel Boone: Our experience tells us that mixing 11-15 year olds in these classes causes the younger Scouts to shut down because they cannot really follow the conversation. Since the badge is complete they do not return to the topic later and sometimes equate the class experience with the topic, calling it 'boring'. The Eagle required MB's are very important and we, like you, want the best possible experience for the youth. For Shotgun- the guns are heavy and the recoil hurts/bruises the smaller scouts. Evaluate the personality of your Scout to be in a class with older Scouts.
Several are asking about the C.O.P.E program. Here is some clarification. It is NOT a MB. The COPE program is designed to enhance the Scouting experience and to promote Scouting values and objectives among its participants with fun and challenging activities. The events and activities of COPE are not designed to be competitive or a race against time, but rather are intended to encourage participants to do their best. COPE emphasizes building self- esteem, developing leadership, and working as a team to accomplish tasks; and it provides opportunities for every participant to succeed as an individual and as a member of a group. A COPE experience at Camp Daniel Boone is composed of initiative games, trust events, low-course activities, and high-course activities. It is challenge by choice, so if a scout chooses to opt out of any portion, that is fine.
Merit Badge Class Quick Reference - A view of classes being offered
Merit Badge Class Schedule - Review this to determine MB class options and schedule
Day Rafting Trips - Scouts can add a rafting trip on the Nantahala, French Broad, or Pigeon River. These trips are only offered on Tuesday or Thursday and are $50. A waiver needs to be completed.
Rafting Add-Ons - Add Zip Lining for $30 more. There is also the option to buy a picture package when rafting the Nantahala or Pigeon Rivers.
Maps - Use these maps and location assignments to plan as efficient a schedule . . . if possible so the Scout can get to each class during the breaks and not ping-pong around the camp.
Class Locations - Coming soon!
Payments
Due by March 29 - $200 deposit via check (made out to BSA Troop 77) to the Troop's black box to secure a spot.
April 26 - final balance due (you will receive an invoice)
Boonesboro Village - All Scouts have the option to participate. This guide outlines what campers will experience in life skills and crafts that were common in the late 1700s.
Merit Badge Class Selection Form
Complete this to select merit badge classes and activities. Due by March 29
adult LEADERS!
Three options for Adults!
High Adventure (HA)
Adult Leaders are welcome to participant in any of the High Adventure opportunities. The HA treks at Camp Daniel Boone are legendary. Spots in each trek are VERY limited, often being one adult spot per trek.
Sign-up on the Registration Link (at end of this page)
Payments - Adult fees are the published Camp Daniel Boone Fees. To determine the Camp Daniel Boone fee, subtract $50 from each Trek in the above "Camp Fees" section. The Troop does not cover any HA costs for adults.
Upon Registration - $200 deposit via check (made out to Troop 77) to the Troop's black box to secure a spot.
April 26 - final balance
Traditional Summer Camp
Adult/parent leadership IS A MUST at the Troops' campsites. Therefore, we need some parent volunteers to make the week successful. Within the Troop Scout fee, we have priced up to 6 adults staying for free to support the Summer Camp program. If more adults are interested than spots available, the Troop Leadership will determine which adults will participate, with priority given to those adults who have given the most time and effort to the Troop.
Review all the Summer Camp info for Leaders in the 2022 Leaders Guide, which includes info on adult programs.
Boonesboro Village - This guide outlines what campers will experience in life skills and crafts that were common in the late 1700s. Adult fee is $390 and is not covered by the Troop.
waivers
Click the link to print and sign the waiver for any activity your scout may be interested in. We will then have it on file.
Waiver - Whitewater rafting waiver. Due by March 29, with registration
Medical Forms
Summer camp requires Medical Forms A/B1/B2/C for all Scouts and Adults and a CLEAR copy of the front and back of the scout/adult attending insurance card.
Part C must be completed by licensed medical practitioner (so get them completed early)
The completed Medical Forms, A/B1/B2/C are due April 26.
May 10 - Medical Form Check Off - Come during your assigned time to review any incomplete/incorrect details on medical forms you turned in previously. This is mandatory.
This was a huge issue in year's past and is a REQUIREMENT, not an option. Your scout will not depart with us on the trip if the forms have not been received.
Scan and keep a copy of these forms as you and your scout are responsible to ensure they are up-to-date each year.
Scout BSA Medical Forms A/B1/B2/C - Due by April 26
Prescription Medication?
If your scout will need prescription medication during the week you will need to:

dietary request or special needs?
The menu at Camp Daniel Boone is primarily high calorie-high carbohydrate, so not the place to start a diet! Beginning with the summer of 2022, CDB food service will only be able to fulfill special dietary requests for vegetarian and/or faith-based diets. We ask that individuals with special dietary needs bring their own specialty foods with them to Camp to supplement our menu. These specialty foods must be stored, prepped, and cooked in the troop’s campsite. CDB will provide and deliver ice for food storage to campers daily. Due to contamination concerns, we cannot grant access to the Camp Kitchen for food preparation, storage, or cooking. If you wish to communicate directly with the kitchen team, you may do so via email specialneeds4cdb@gmail.com. Be sure to include your troop number and week attending. Once summer camp begins, it is best to call the dining hall: (828) 235-2776
A word about peanuts: Camp Daniel Boone does not serve peanuts as part of the regular menu. However, that does not mean there will not be nuts in certain items at camp, such as prepackaged cookies, ice cream flavors as well as other items sold in the trading post. Additionally, wrapped peanut butter and jelly sandwiches will be available to Scouts during mealtimes in the dining hall. We will gladly check labels as needed and encourage your Scout to do the same. Please encourage your Scout to take personal responsibility for checking labels and making safe food choices.
If an attending adult has a special needs request eg, needs an electric outlet for medical equipment then please complete the form below and turn in with your registration
Swim Test?
Swim tests will be performed at Camp Daniel Boone upon arrival. This is different than past Summer Camps.
Cookies/snacks
There is a long standing tradition for parents to make snacks (cookies, brownies, bacon for the adults, etc) to send with us for the week. We give these out to scouts that did a good deed, as a daily pick me up, and just because. You do not have to send anything but thanks to those that do.
You will drop them off at Scout Hall the day before departure, Saturday, July 16.
Label all homemade cookies (Gluten Free, Nut Free, etc.) for easier distribution to scouts with allergies.
Please make sure all cookies are in a disposable container that will not need to be returned.
Mail Call
Scouts LOVE to receive mail and packages from home. Please send packages in enough time for them to arrive during the week. Please send mail and packages to:
