Study abroad on a leave of absence

When students use a leave of absence from Toyo University to study at an overseas university, the credits that they earn abroad can be transferred to Toyo University. To request transfer of credits earned abroad to Toyo University, students must carry out the designated procedure in advance.

Duration of study abroad

A study abroad period must not exceed the period for the leave of absence.

Note: Students are prohibited from taking a leave of absence longer than two consecutive semesters (one year) in principle.

Procedures for study abroad on a leave of absence

1. Submit notification of the study abroad period and other information to the Center for Global Education and Exchange (1st floor, Building 8).

2. Carry out the procedures for taking a leave of absence at the Education Affairs Section for the Faculty of Global and Regional Studies (1st floor, Building 6).

3. Request transfer of credits earned while studying abroad on a leave of absence from the Education Affairs Section for the Faculty of Global and Regional Studies.

Credit transfer

• Department of Global Innovation Studies

Credit transfer for specialized courses will follow the credit transfer system for the GINOS Long-Term Study Abroad Program. Credits earned at university-affiliated language schools will not be transferred.

• Department of Regional Development Studies

Credit transfer for specialized courses will follow the credit transfer system for long-term study abroad programs. Credits earned in the Bridge Program or university-affiliated language schools will be transferred in accordance with the credit transfer system for the English language at the Department of Regional Development Studies for semester abroad language programs (English-speaking countries) and long-term study abroad programs (Bridge Programs, ESL etc.) (English programs).

Notes

• If you study abroad on a leave of absence without performing the procedures for study abroad on a leave of absence at the Center for Global Education and Exchange, the study abroad will not be considered as “study abroad on a leave of absence,” and no credit will be transferred.

• You will not be allowed to register for courses offered at Toyo University during your leave of absence. Students who study abroad while enrolled in the university are allowed to take seminars and courses offered at the University before departure or after returning to Japan, but students who study abroad on a leave of absence are not allowed to do so.

• The Department of Global Innovation Studies does not accept study abroad on a leave of absence as an alternative to the GINOS Long-term Study Abroad Program.
