GRADE and GPA
Credits are awarded for each registered subject, based on class participation, examination scores (including written assignments), etc.
Toyo University’s grading criteria are as follows.
Learning goals mentioned above refer to those described in the syllabus for the relevant subject.
To earn credits for a registered subject, you must attend at least two-thirds of all classes and pass the prescribed examinations (including assignments and in-class exams).
"Ineligible for grading" will be indicated on a grade report when grading is impossible due to poor attendance (failure to attend at least two-third of the classes), unsubmitted papers, or failure to take exams.
Besides grades in the above table, a grade of T (abbreviation of Transfer) will be indicated as a passing grade when a subject taken at another institution abroad or in Japan is accepted at Toyo University.
Grades will be posted on ToyoNet-G each quarter and semester. The date of the grade announcement will be publicized through Toyo University Official App .
The grade report of students will be sent to their guarantor (excluding international students). If you do not want us to send your grade report to your guarantor, complete the procedures at the Education Affairs Section within the specified period.
The GPA (Grade Point Average) is widely used by universities in Japan and abroad as an indicator to measure a student’s academic performance. When a student completes a subject, the student is assigned a letter grade. Each letter grade awarded has an associated numeric grade point value ranging from 0.0 to 4.3. The GPA is the average of grade points per credit for all subjects taken.
The subjects included in the GPA calculation are those required for graduation, while qualification subjects and free-elective subjects that are not part of the graduation requirements are not included.
The grades included in the GPA calculation are S, A, B, C, D, E, and * (asterisk): a "T" grade is excluded from the GPA calculation.
If a student repeats a failed subject and receives a passing grade, the new grade will be used in the GPA. (This dose not count as credits to be included in the "total number of registered credits" which is the denominator for calculating the GPA.)
The GPA is rounded to the second decimal place. (The third decimal place is rounded off.)
If you believe that there is an error in the grade that you have been issued, you can apply for a grade appeal to your instructor, who will then check whether there is an error in grading. An application for grade appeal and confirmation of application results must be done via ToyoNet-G during designated period.
The aim of grade appeal is not to ask the instructor to reconsider the grade or to disclose further information. If you fail to provide adequate grounds or if your application is not in line with the aim of grade appeal, your application will be rejected. Be sure to check the grading criteria of the University and the“ Methods of Evaluation and Grading Criteria” section in the syllabus for the relevant subject before submitting an application.
After a semester or an academic year is over, students will be offered study guidance on a face-to-face basis if the faculty or department determines it necessary because of an overly low number of earned credits, a below-standard GPA, or other problems faced during the semester or academic year. Students may be advised to change their study plans. Please receive guidance if you are instructed to do so by your faculty or department.
