TAKING COURSES
TAKING COURSES
Check your department’s curriculum (the curriculum map, graduation requirements and curriculum table), and make a four-year study plan. Be sure to take compulsory subjects (subjects that must be taken) and elective compulsory subjects (subjects in which you choose a set number of subjects or credits from a designated category/subject) as early as possible in the allocated academic year.
Curriculum for each department
Please check here (*Clicking will take you to the “Curriculum” page.) for the curriculum for each faculty, department, and major.
Key points for course planning
Understand your Department’s graduation requirements
In accordance with the curriculum table, check which subjects have high priority among the graduation requirements, such as compulsory subjects and elective compulsory subjects, and take them as early as possible in the appropriate year (year in which they are allowed to be taken).
Ensure that there are no overlaps in the class schedule timetable (day of the week, period and semester in which the courses are offered) between the courses that you wish to take. If there is any overlap, take courses in consideration of the priorities described in 2. above.
Check the lecture schedule, attendance requirements, grade evaluation criteria, etc. on the syllabi of the courses you wish to take.
When advancing to the next year or after grades are announced, look back at the courses you have taken and earned credits for, and check the remaining credits and courses you need to complete. Also, refer to your department’s curriculum map to understand the relationships between the courses you have taken so far and the courses you will take, as well as the knowledge, skills, abilities, etc. that you need to develop before graduation, so that you can take appropriate courses, including electives.
Consult with instructors and administrative staff as needed.
Course registration is a procedure in which students, on their own responsibility, decide the courses they wish to take and register for them within a designated period of time.
In the case of new students, their intention to study at the University is confirmed by course registration.
If you fail to complete course registration within the specified period, you will not be allowed to take the courses you want, and as a result, you will not be able to receive credits for them.
💡For details on how to register for courses, the schedule, etc., please check the "Course Registration Navi" website, which is distributed each academic year.
The system for recognition of language credits is that through which language credits are recognized when students meet certain standards in various language exams and perform designated procedures. The purpose is to encourage students to continue learning the language they have started and to increase opportunities for advanced learning. Read the outline of the system below thoroughly, and complete the designated procedure within the application period in each semester if you wish to use the system.
How to apply
For details on the application method, period etc., please check the "Course Registration Navi" website, which is distributed each academic year.
A copy of the certificate for each language qualification (certificate, score report, result letter, etc.) is required for application.
Process for credit recognition
(i) Application: Please apply with all necessary documents.
(ii) Credit transfer: After the deliberation at the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Global and Regional Studies, the results will be reflected in your grade.
(iii) Grade confirmation: Please confirm that the grades are correctly recorded in the approved courses at the announcement of grades at the end of the semester.

Points to note
Please do not register for courses on ToyoNet-G whose credits you want to apply through this system. If the courses whose credits you want to apply have been automatically registered due to class placement, they will be deleted from your course timetable by the Education Affairs Section after completing the credit recognition procedures.
Also, the number of credits to be taken in a semester must not exceed the maximum, including courses for which you wish to apply credit recognition.
(Example: If the maximum number of credits you can earn is 22 and you wish to apply for 6 credits through the system, you may register for up to 16 credits.)
Applications for credit recognition are limited to subjects listed in the curriculum table of the department/course to which you belong.
Applications for credit recognition can be made regardless of the semester in which the course is offered.
It is possible to apply for credit recognition multiple times unless the number of credits applied exceeds the maximum number of recognized language credits for each language.
It is not possible to apply for courses if your current year does not meet the required year for the course. For example, it is not possible to apply for credit recognition for courses designated for '2nd to 4th years' while in your 1st year. Please apply after your 2nd year.
It is not possible to apply for recognition of credits from courses in which you have already earned credits and received grades. (Assigned grades cannot be overwritten.)
The system allows you to register for courses that are not included in your department’s curriculum table (excluding one-year courses) as free-elective courses with the permission of the instructor in charge. If you wish to take free-elective courses, please check the notes below and complete the prescribed procedures during the course registration period.
Points to note
Courses offered at campuses other than the Hakusan Campus are not available.
You cannot take courses that have the same name as courses offered in your own course/department/faculty.
You cannot take courses included in the curriculum of academic years other than the academic year in which you enrolled.
Day Course students cannot take courses offered in the Evening Course.
Evening Course students cannot take courses offered in the Day Course.
Conform to the year (semester) of study designated by the Faculty/Department that offers the course you wish to take.
Please note that some courses, including those subject to registration restrictions, cannot be taken despite permission to do so by the instructors in charge.
Courses taken as free-elective courses will not be included in the maximum number of credits (per semester, etc.).
💡For details on how to apply, etc., please check the "Course Registration Navi" website, which is distributed each academic year.
To enable undergraduate students who hope to advance to the graduate school to begin their continuous specialized studies in advance before being admitted, the Faculty of Global and Regional Studies adopted a system for undergraduate students to register for graduate school courses. If you wish to participate, read the outline of the system below and follow the prescribed procedure.
System Outline
This system enables fourth-year students in the Faculty of Global and Regional Studies to register for courses taught at the Graduate School of Global and Regional Studies, Toyo University.
On the application submitted by a student during the course registration period in the first semester following his/her admission to the Graduate School of Global and Regional Studies, Toyo University, the credits that the he/she earned using this system will be transferred to the credits required for completion of the Master’s Program after deliberations are carried out.
To use this system, students must meet all the following requirements:
(1) Must be enrolled as a fourth-year student in the Faculty of Global and Regional Studies or the Department of Regional Development Studies of the Faculty of Regional Development Studies
(2) Must intend to advance to the Master’s Program at the Graduate School of Global and Regional Studies after graduating from the Faculty of Global and Regional Studies.
(3) Must have already earned 102 or more credits among the credits required for graduation if the system is used in the seventh semester, or must have already earned 110 or more credits among the credits required for graduation if the system is used in the eighth semester.

Graduate school courses that can be registered for through this system consist of lecture (or seminar) courses taught during the relevant semester in the Master’s Program at the Graduate School of Global and Regional Studies (*except for some courses).
Courses registered for through this system are treated at the undergraduate level as free-elective subjects that do not count toward graduation and fall outside the annual number of registered credits.
This system enables each student to register for courses worth up to 15 credits during his/her fourth year.
Grades for courses registered through this system will be recorded in the original grade register, Grade Report, and Academic Transcript issued by the faculty. Students can submit an application for credit transfer along with the record when they are admitted to the Graduate School of Global and Regional Studies.
