Physical Education

Physical Education is a National Curriculum foundation subject for all students at Kelvin Hall School. Physical Education contributes to the overall education of young people by helping them to lead full and valuable lives through engaging in purposeful physical activity.

It is our aim to develop pupils’ competence and confidence by taking part in a range of physical activities that will become a central part of their lives, both in and out of school. We will provide opportunities for students to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities will build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Hours per week:

Year 7, Year 8, Year 9: 2 hours

Year 10 and Year 11: 1 hour

All students, from Year 7 to 11, take part in a broad national curriculum in their PE core lessons. Years 7 to 9 receive 2 hours of core PE and Years 10 and 11 receive 1 hour. Students work predominantly in single-sex groupings,  although there are on occasions mixed-sex groupings.  Assessments take place after the completion of a block of sport, usually lasting the duration of one half-term. Students are given continual feedback in all lessons on how to improve, and are taught to develop their own targets for improvement.

Students can opt to study a Cambridge National in Sport Studies in Year 9, with many of our alumni progressing into careers within professional sport.
