If you are not sure which music course to choose, we will advise you of the one most suitable for you and best matches your interests and strengths, as there are two main pathways to follow at KS4. On the Google Form, you will only need to select 'Music'. Either way, if you are interested in furthering your skills this uses a whole range of them and you can tailor it to your strengths and areas of interest. Both courses require students to perform music on their chosen instrument (including voice).
This is comprised of 3 components, exploring musical skills and how to apply them through the following:
Performing - Minimum of 2 pieces - 1 Ensemble and a Solo or 2nd Ensemble, at least 4-6 minutes long, combined, to be recorded for assessment.
Composing - Students compose two compositions, between 3-6 minutes combined duration - one to a set brief and one free choice composition. The composition can be created on Sibelius, Logic or Garageband software, all available in the music department.
Listening and Appraising Set Works - this is focussed on testing musical elements, musical contexts and musical language through different areas of study: Musical Forms & Devices, Music for Ensemble, Film Music and Popular Music. The set works we need to study in more detail are Badinerie by J.S. Bach, and Africa, by Toto. You will get a chance to play and explore many styles of music over the course.
If you are already studying an instrument, including singing, then you will be able to use any of those pieces you are performing during the course. If you want to start having lessons, these can also be arranged for you.
You will learn the skills and techniques needed to produce a successful performance of an existing work and learn how to create and refine an original composition. You will learn about areas of the performing arts industry that need to be considered when responding to a commission and will consider these when coming up with and pitching your own idea.
You will be assessed through project work. For Units 1 and 2 you will undertake projects (not exams) in response to briefs. The project for each Unit will take 10 hours and be worth 30% of your qualification. For each project, you will be given a scenario and undertake some tasks. In Unit 3 you will undertake another project (no exam) in response to a brief, which will take 20 hours and be worth 40% of your qualification. Again, you will be given a scenario and undertake a set of tasks.
You will study:
Unit 1: Performing - This unit can be completed through Music and Music Technology.
Unit 2: Creating - This unit can be completed through Composition (also using Music Technology).
Unit 3: Performing Arts in Practice You will learn about areas of the performing arts industry that need to be considered when responding to a commission and will consider these when coming up with and pitching your own idea.
Please be aware that this vocational course is unavailable if your other option is Drama. It is possible, however, to select the Eduqas GCSE Music course instead of the Technical Award.
