Our Art qualification is split into 3 specialisms: Art Craft & Design; Fine Art; Photography. Each specialism will need a different skill set from students. An interest in the subject is what it takes to succeed at this level but drawing skills are also needed for all three specialisms, including Photography.
You will choose between Art Craft & Design; Fine Art; Photography when you select your choices, however In the first year you will not do the specialism but you will learn many new techniques and processes across all 3 of the art subjects. This is like a foundation year, where you will look at skills and how to master them to produce your own sketch books and final outcomes. After the first year you will then go into your chosen specialism and do this until the end of Year 11.
You are able to choose two art-based subjects as long as one of them is Photography. If you do this you will spend four hours with us in art each week developing your skills and you will obtain two separate GCSE qualifications in art.
Fine Art is based on creating something to exhibit, such as a painting, drawing or sculpture. You will use a wide range of media, materials and techniques but ultimately you get to decide how you want your outcomes to look.
In Fine Art you will do one project based around the theme of 'In the News' where you will choose your own artist's influence and develop all of your ideas into a final outcome. The second project is based on the theme 'The Self', this will be independently led and you can interpret the theme as you see fit. A keen interest in drawing, painting or sculptures will allow you to succeed in this GCSE.
