There are two types of inserts available to machine the diameter down on Project 2. Apprentices should review the two links below to become familiar with the both inserts. Both inserts are able to be installed in the Kennametal tool holder linked above.
The CNMG322-MP grade KCU10 is a general purpose insert with a 1/32" nose radius.
The CNMG321-FN grade KCP10 is a finishing operation insert with 1/64" nose radius.
Grades will be used to select SFM values on the chart below.
When calculating the lathe spindle rpm use the formula:
RPM = 3.82 x SFM/Diameter
Inch per Revolution (IPR) and Depth of Cut (DOC) need to be selected to determine the Feed Rate and number of cuts needed for the turning operation. Use the two pictures below as a guide to select the IPR and DOC values.
