The surface plate is utilized in precision measurements as the base flat reference surface to which other measurement tools rest.
The flatness of the surface plate is controlled and calibrated and provides a reliable plane to serve as a Datum Surface in measurement calculations. Many surface plate setups rely on the use of multiple inspection tools, gauges, and devices. Treating the surface plate as a Datum surface ensures zero bias between inspection tools, gauges, devices, and the location on the surface of the plate that is used for measurement. A proper surface plate will provide consistent measurement values no mater where on the surface a measurement takes place.
See below for the instructions for Surface Plate Setup A, Surface Plate Setup B, and Surface Plate Setup C required in the final inspection of Project 1.
Surface Plate Setups A, B, and C instructions to be developed.
