What is Engineering Robotics?
Engineering Robotics is a computer and manufacturing design program focusing on robotic technologies. Our program integrates real world robotic technology with computerized machining and control systems - the whole package is supported with complementary academic subjects and cooperative education opportunities. Participants learn the importance of teamwork, self-starting, character and time management while learning technology skills of the future.
The Engineering Robotics curriculum focuses on the student's development as an independent learner and creative/critical thinker. All activities are student-centered and project driven. Our award winning FIRST Robotics program is fully integrated into the curriculum providing leadership opportunities to all participants. We aspire to help young people discover how interesting and rewarding the lives of engineers and scientists can be.
Who is the Engineering Robotics student?
You are a candidate for our program if you would consider designing and building a robot to be a fascinating experience. You are a candidate if you are inspired by science and technology. You are a candidate if you enjoy seeing your creations come to life.
The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) @ Western
The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is an Ontario designation that allows students to focus on a possible career path that matches their individual skills and interests. Engineering Robotics is a bundle of 8 courses related to the Computer Engineering and Manufacturing Robotics industry. The SHSM program is a reach ahead experience which includes: sector-recognized certifications and training courses, experiential learning (including Cooperative Education credits), use of the Ontario Skills Passport and development of essential skills and work habits required in the sector, opportunities for Dual Credit programs in a variety of post-secondary institutions, and contextualized learning activities that integrate theory with practice. Students learn with industry standard equipment and instructors who have worked directly in the field. Students who complete the SHSM requirements graduate with a red seal on their diploma. This will indicate a universal provincial designation of a higher level of achievement to all post secondary schools no matter what program the student may choose to pursue. Grade 9 & 10 Courses of Interest
Western has Robotics-focused courses of interest for Grades 9 and 10. Students interested in Engineering Robotics at Western can take ICD2O (Digital Technology and Innovations in the Changing World) in their Grade 9 year.
To see the course, change the Grade drop-down to Grade 10. ICD2O can be found under Computer Studies.
In Grade 10, TDJ2O (Intro. to Technological Design) and TMJ2O (Intro. to Manufacturing Technology) are taken as part of the robotics local programming.

Western participates in the highest level of competition offered by the FIRST Robotics organization, and shares their goal: "To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders". Our WARP7 Team is effectively a real world design team that completely embodies the spirit of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), where students lead all aspects of the project: engineering, manufacturing, computer programming, marketing, web design, graphic arts, and project management.
