Northern English Department

Overview

Our English department’s aim is to graduate courageous, engaged, and empathetic young adults, who are forever developing through a life-long habit of reading.

The English Department fosters a high level of literacy that supports the empowerment of people in all personal, professional, and social aspects of life.

Literature is at home in the English Department, and is our best teacher. Character teaches us about values and relationships. Point of view instructs us about perspective, diversity, and empathy. Conflict pushes us out of our comfort zones. Theme offers us insight.

The Northern English Department strives to challenge itself constantly. We aim to question and reframe our practices, to juxtapose old and new texts, and to welcome community involvement in order to encourage authentic and exciting classrooms of learning.

We believe the English classroom is where students learn to cultivate a healthy reading habit, and to engage critically and deeply with diverse ideas through written, oral, and media forms of expression.
