Student Success

overview

At Northern, we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to succeed. With the implementation of our student success initiatives, students are supported academically and socially, while being given the opportunity to build on their strengths. Our student success team includes: Principal, Vice-Principals, ACL of Student Success, Guidance, Special Education and Teachers. This team works together to ensure each student is supported in building their own unique pathway through high school while achieving success at Northern.

How does Student Success help our students?

STUDENT SUCCESS INITIATIVES

Credit rescue programs intervene prior to a student experiencing failure in a course.

Credit Recovery (RCR1O1) allows students who have failed a course to only repeat expectations where they have been unsuccessful rather than redoing the whole course. Selection process is based on past student achievement, attendance patterns, and overall credit accumulation

Dual Credits count toward a student's high school diploma as well as a college certificate, diploma or apprenticeship certification. Students attend classes on a college campus one afternoon a week for approximately 15 weeks. Upon successful completion of the college delivered course, students earn both a college credit and secondary school credit (grade 12 elective credit) which will count towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

L2L Peer Tutoring Club offers senior students a Licensed 2 Learn training program. Once these students complete the Tutor Training Program, they use their spare periods throughout the school day to visit classes and tutor students who require additional support. Our Peer Tutors receive community service hours for their help and our younger students are given the opportunity to build friendships with older student role models.

Pathways to Education is a partnership between the TDSB and Pathways Communities. At Northern, Pathways helps many youth graduate from high school by offering tutoring, social support, mentoring, financial support and planning for their life after high school. These supports are proven to remove barriers to graduation and promote positive youth development during critical high school years.

Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM) allow students to focus on a future career through a bundle of classroom courses, workplace experiences and sector certifications. An added advantage is that students can earn valuable industry certifications through the SHSM. Three SHSM sectors are offered at Northern: Arts and Culture, Health and Wellness and Manufacturing (Design, Engineering and Fabrication)

Student Nutrition Program (SNP) offers students in need, access to free healthy food options. We believe that when you have enough healthy food to eat, you feel energized, can concentrate in class and perform well in school. Our program is funded by the Toronto Foundation for Student Success and supported by our school and community.
