Going back to school after a summer break can be an adjustment, even under normal circumstances. This year brings additional challenges and stress because of COVID-19. It’s important to acknowledge that returning to school will look and feel quite different this year, whether it’s in-person learning, remote learning or a combination of both. You can help your children to know what to expect, be flexible when things are uncertain, and feel confident about the return to school.

Students wear masks at all times while indoors.
Two (2) metres of physical distancing (linear separation between individuals in all directions) should be maintained at all times. This is equivalent to a minimum of 4 square metres of floor space per participant.
Any equipment, including basketballs, must be disinfected before and after use.
Student’s should limit touching their hands to their face during HPE class. Headband, wrist band, towel etc. should be used to prevent the need for attending to dripping sweat.
Each student should be assigned one ball if possible, students are encouraged to bring their own personal ball if applicable. Students may share balls, but should be placed in small cohorts such as partners or groups of 3. Students should stay in their groupings for the duration of the class.
Students should be assigned to a basket for the duration of the class, or for as long as possible. Total number of students assigned to a basketball net can not exceed 5.
If students are assigned a waiting area near the basketball net, they need to be instructed to maintain a 2m physical distance amongst other students.
When multiple students are assigned to the same basketball net, they should maintain 2m physical distance from each other at all times.
Students must retrieve their own basketballs when practicing skill development such as dribbling, passing against wall, and shooting.
Activities to develop techniques specific to basketball. For example: footwork exercises, ball handling, shooting and offensive techniques, passing and rebounding. All these activities are carried out individually with a ball or while sharing a ball with teammates.
Fundamental Movement Skills:
Motor and physical development activities to warm up/cool down and work on coordination, mobility, speed, balance, flexibility, etc. All these activities are carried out individually, with or without a ball.
Skills that can be taught and practiced:
Ball handling including dribbling, cross-overs, pivoting.
Shooting exercises: Students to shoot on assigned basketball nets.
Passing skills and exercises: Begin with passing against the wall, and proceed to passing with a designated partner.
Footwork skills.
Defensive skills.
No competition (shooting / dribbling challenges at own baskets permitted). Students must retrieve their own basketball or use alternative methods (i.e. avoid touching with hands, use feet etc.) to return basketballs to fellow students.
Challenges at each basketball net can include: “Challenges” are activities which include competition between 2 or more students but without opposition (i.e., no possibility of contact). These activities can take the form of shooting/scoring games, accumulating points in a specific time, completing a series of tasks in a “race” format, etc. These activities can be carried out with 2 or more students, with or without a ball.
All activities and challenges should be modified to avoid physical contact between students.
Modified shooting game of 21: Students either use their own ball or if necessary share a ball.
Around the World: Shooting challenge performed from various spots around the basketball net.
Bump.
H-O-R-S-E.
Lay-up Challenges.
Golf Hoops (visit this link for additional games).
Student’s should be asked to compete with a “Play On” mentality. No arguing or disputing amongst classmates during challenges.
Masks are not required when playing basketball outdoors.
Students should be encouraged to bring their own basketballs. Any shared basketballs should be cleaned and sanitized at an increased frequency, and between each use.
When engaging in basketball outdoors or during recess the students should be in groups to form a cohort. The cohort should always include only the same people. Cohorts limit the risk of disease transmission because they reduce the number of contacts with whom the students interact with.
All games listed in indoor basketball can be played outdoors.
It is recognized that incidental contact between students is inevitable – however, all students should go out of their way to avoid creating unsafe play.
No games involving defense can be played.
