Asian Heritage Month is proudly recognized during the month of May at the Toronto District School Board. More than 40% of TDSB students self-identify as Asian. The selected theme for this year is, “Discover. Share. Celebrate”.
This year’s Asian Heritage Month activity includes the Asian heritage impact to the liberation of Holocaust survivors to recognize the 75th Liberation Anniversary. The two individuals being highlighted are: Ho Feng Shan, Chinese diplomat, and also Dr. George Bluman who shares his family’s escape from the Holocaust due to the action of Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara.
Further, we are pleased to share with you once again the photography slide show that were displayed last year (May 2019) on the main floor of 5050 Yonge Street to recognize Asian Heritage Month. Enjoy! PowerPoint Presentation

This year the Jewish Heritage Month Committee of the TDSB acknowledges 75 years since liberation from the Holocaust.
On January 27, 2020 – Holocaust Remembrance Day - we held a special TDSB One Book Event. In partnership with Indigo and Second Story Press, all Grade 6 students (more than 18,000) throughout the TDSB received their own copy of Hana’s Suitcase. On January 27, a special webcast featuring Heather Reisman and Lara Hana Brady (niece of Hana) was the largest audience we’ve ever had at TDSB with 965 computers clicking in – which means thousands of students and teachers watched. The incredibly positive feedback and learning continues in classrooms. Canadian Jewish News Article. Author Karen Levine has also produced a video specifically for our TDSB students.
Please check out our website where we house resources for Holocaust and Genocide Education. We continually update the website as we learn of new resources teachers can use. Our committee looks forward to continuing our work “Encouraging Students to Investigate and Understand the Past to Think Critically about the Present and Future”.

Throughout May, Muslims will be celebrating Ramadan- one of the holiest and most uplifting months in the Islamic Calendar.
During the month of Ramadan Muslims around the world abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset for 30 consecutive days.
The attached offers some information about Ramadan and tips and considerations so we can support our Muslim students and colleagues who are observing Ramadan while continuing to work or participate in classes and learning remotely.
Should additional information be required, please contact humanrightsoffice@tdsb.on.ca.

Summary: Schools may be shuttered in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but one Toronto District School Board school in Scarborough has found a way to get together. Since the pandemic was declared, Dr. Marion Hilliard Senior Public School in the Malvern neighbourhood has been holding weekly Google Meets. “It’s just really crazy to scroll through the names and just see all my friends there. It’s just great,” said Akshayan Pravaharan, who joined the forum Wednesday. The online platform allows students to get answers to important questions like, when they’ll be able to pick up their belongings from school, what does COVID-19 means for graduation, and when they can expect to see their report card.

Since 2018 the KICK (Keeping it Cool Kids) program has been delivered in schools around the community. The Grade Six class at Burrows Hall Public School has been very fortunate to have been receiving this program. With the recent events of COVID-19 Malvern Family Resource Centre has taken the program on an online platform via Google Classroom and Instagram (@MalvernFRC).

These skills include building healthy relationships, conflict resolution, managing emotions, self-care strategies, and decision-making skills. The classroom will have weekly activities posted to engage youth.
