Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week – November 15-21, 2020
Ontario has designated the week beginning on the third Sunday of November as Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week to help promote safe schools and a positive learning environment. Ontario students, school staff and parents are encouraged to learn more about bullying and its effect on student learning and well-being.
Bullying is defined as a form of repeated, persistent and aggressive behaviour directed at an individual or individuals that is intended to cause (or should be known to cause) fear and distress and/or harm to another person's body, feelings, self-esteem or reputation. Bullying occurs in a context where there is a real or perceived power imbalance.
Schools are encouraged to use this opportunity to explain the different forms bullying can take. These include:
Physical – hitting, shoving, stealing or damaging property
Verbal – name calling, mocking, or making sexist, racist or homophobic comments
Social – excluding others from a group or spreading gossip or rumours about them
Electronic (commonly known as cyberbullying) – spreading rumours and hurtful comments through the use of cellphones, e-mail, text messaging and through social media.
Safe Schools Teams
A Safe Schools Team are planning activities that heighten awareness of bullying and its impact on the school community. Each school in Ontario has a safe schools team working to promote a safer and more welcoming learning environment. Teams include the school principal, a teacher, a student (where appropriate), a parent and a member from the broader community.
Bowmore Parent Online Workshop
Thursday, November 12th, 2020
@ 8:00-8:45 p.m. EST
Dear Bowmore Parents,
Join us for an online workshop that shares some valuable tools that are being taught at school and can also be used at home to raise healthier kids!
In this workshop, Monsieur Overby and Madame Connors will present some insights and tools for Social Emotional Learning (SEL) which can help students at school and at home become more resilient and mentally strong. SEL tools like Zones of Regulation and EFT Tapping technique will be shared. These have been known to effectively help in:
+ regulating emotions
+ reducing stress/anxiety
+ helping have better sleep
+ creating a better sense of optimism and well-being even in challenging times
Some resources will be shared to use at home as well. Certain parts will have a focus for children in the K-3 age group but the ideas can be applied or modified for any age.
It would be great to have you there to connect as a community in this way. If you are not able to attend, we will do our best to have a recorded video to watch afterwards.
Stay healthy and well!
Madame Connors & Monsieur Overby
