This document is in keeping with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms & the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
All patrons of the library have a right to the following within reasonable limits prescribed by the Canadian Constitution and law, school code of conduct and school values of a free and democratic environment:
➢ Open, inclusive and safe access to library facilities, resources, instructional programs and one-on-one support from the Teacher-Librarian during operating hours and unlimited remote access to resources through the website
➢ Experience the L.L.C. as a place that supports and promotes the universal principles of intellectual freedom
➢ Engage with free inquiry and use resources to assist them in inquiry process
➢ Access a full range of knowledge and resources needed for academic success
➢ Have opinions, imagination and ideas recognized and encouraged and be able to express themselves in a variety of ways
➢ Be recognized as an individual with unique interests, habits, learning styles, aspirations, needs and preferences
➢ Access resources in English, French and as many languages as possible and to feel that the L.L.C. furthers students’ cultural enrichment
➢ Pursue learning and reading for pleasure in addition to academic purposes and to use the space for leisure during operating hours
➢ See their unique identities (including but not limited to ethnicity, orientation, religious beliefs and abilities) represented in diverse texts and resources housed in the L.L.C. both physically and digitally
➢ Enjoy an environment that promotes literacy, numeracy and lifelong learning in many forms
➢ Have their personal identities, activities and original work be protected (in the case of work, as their own intellectual and/or physical property)
➢ Be taught tenets of intellectual property and academic integrity
➢ Access resources without imposed age, grade-level, or reading-level restriction (though
the Teacher-Librarian may make suggestions for reading and viewing, which students may or may not accept)
➢ Experience no barriers within the space, including but not limited to physical barriers
➢ Advocate for their learning rights and needs
➢ Experience the L.L.C. as a place where multi-literacies are valued, encouraged and developed
➢ Experience an L.L.C. that resists calls for censorship and the adoption of systems that deny or restrict access to resources and information
