Interview types and content can vary from country to country and program to program. The following will detail the different types of interviews primarily associated with the USA and UK but can be applied to a variety of institutions and programs around the world.
Tip: Always check the institution's admissions website to research what type of interview an admissions representative may be conducting.
Exam Out Loud - This is literally working through a problem or text and they can vary depending on the subject you're applying to study – for example, English students may have to discuss a poem with their interviewer, while maths applicants might be asked to solve an equation. Remember it’s not about getting the question correct. They will want evidence that you can solve problems, think independently, and are willing to engage with new ideas and present your arguments well.
Informal Discussion - This could be with a university representative, and they will ask traditional interview questions; why this university? How will you contribute to our student community?
Alumni Interview- Many US universities utilize alumni to conduct their interviews and the questions can be similar to an informal discussion.
Audition/Performance - Some programs such as theater and performing arts will have an audition component as part of the application process. TASIS has a fantastic team willing to coach students to prepare for a university audition or performance, if you know this is something you plan on doing let your College Counselor know when you are assigned to them in January.
No matter what the interview type; one thing they all have in common is they want to see that you're genuinely enthusiastic about your subject and the school. Remember to try and yourself!
